Take a vitamin B complex... this is the best way to help hair and nail growth... And your hair & nails will be slightly stronger... You really can't make your hair grow faster than 1/2 an inch a month... Don't buy any of the shampoos claiming to make it grow longer... they basically make your hair feel thicker, and it weighs the hair down.... But it doesn't make it actually grow... If you want it long, fast... go get some extensions... and go get those until your hair is long enough for you to tolerate...

Eat plenty of protein.

Make sure your diet includes high-nutrient foods.

Gently massage your scalp, neck, shoulders and face every day.

Get fresh air and moderate exercise every day and make sure you get adequate sleep.

Basically, the healthier you are, the better it is for your hair growth and condition.

.....Oh ...one more thing. Fall in love. IMO, hair grows faster when you are in love .

I've found the Hair Formula 37 Vitamins/Amino's to be really helpful (I think that HairTopia are almost identical in ingredients).

I also copy and pasted this from a separate website -- it's a diet for healthy hair:

Hair-enhancing diet:
BREAKFAST

option one
Total breakfast cereal with skim milk and blueberries
orange juice

option two
Special K cereal with low-fat soymilk and strawberries
grapefruit juice

option three
All Bran cereal with skim milk and mixed berries
orange juice

LUNCH
option one
turkey sandwich on whole-grain bread with dark green lettuce and tomato
tossed salad with green and red peppers and tomatoes
tangerine
soymilk

option two
split pea soup
dark rye bread
broccoli and carrots with low-fat dip
nectarine
skim milk

option three
garden vegetable pizza
tossed salad with broccoli, green and red peppers and tuna
kiwi
skim milk

DINNER
option one
roast beef
mashed sweet potatoes
steamed green beans
mixed berries drizzled with honey or maple syrup
low-fat soymilk

option two
orange beef broccoli
brown rice
mixed orange and grapefruit sections
low-fat soymilk

option three
glazed pork tenderloins
brussels sprouts
tossed salad with citrus dressing
baked potato with low-fat sour cream
strawberry shortcake
low-fat soymilk

SNACKS
These delicious snacks will boost your energy levels at the same time that they nourish your hair. Be sure to choose at least one snack with nuts and one with soy every day.
• ¼ cup mixed nuts
• ½ cup mixed nuts, seeds and dried fruit
• apple berry smoothie
• tofu cubes in best teriyaki sauce and marinade
• yogurt topped with wheat germ, nuts, and berries
• roasted soy nuts
• Shredded Wheat and low-fat soymilk topped with ground flax seed and fresh fruit

Complementary and Alternative Therapies

A comprehensive treatment plan for hair disorders may include a range of complementary and alternative therapies.
Nutrition • Eat foods high in B vitamins and minerals, such as whole grains, dark leafy greens, and sea vegetables; eat adequate protein.
• Avoid sugar, caffeine, and refined foods.

Potentially beneficial nutrient supplements include the following.
• B-complex vitamins, especially B5 (100 mg four times per day), biotin (300 mcg per day), PABA (30 to 100 mg three times per day), and inositol (250 to 1,000 mg per day)
• Minerals, especially calcium (1,000 mg per day), magnesium (400 mg per day), selenium (100 to 200 mcg per day), manganese (10 mg per day), and zinc (20 to 30 mg per day)
• Vitamin C (500 to 1,000 mg three times per day), vitamin E (400 IU per day), and vitamin A (10,000 IU per day) or beta carotene (25,000 IU per day)
• Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA, DHA, flaxseed oil, fish oil) or omega-6 fatty acids (borage or evening primrose oil), 1 tbs. or equivalent two to three times per day.

Herbs
Herbal remedies may offer relief from symptoms. Herbs are generally available as dried extracts (pills, capsules, or tablets), teas, or tinctures (alcohol extraction, unless otherwise noted). Dose for teas is 1 heaping tsp per cup of water steeped for 10 minutes (roots need 20 minutes).

For alopecia and hair shaft disorders:
• Ginkgo leaf (Ginkgo biloba), rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis), prickly ash bark (Xanthoxylum clava-herculis), horsetail (Equisetum arvense), yarrow (Achillea millefolium), and elderberry (Sambucus nigra)
• For bacterial infections, add coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) with goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis); for fungal infections, add oregano (Origanum vulgare)
• For stress, substitute oatstraw (Avena sativa) for elderberry

For hirsutism:
• Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) 200 mg two to three times per day

Topical applications of essential oils may be beneficial in skin infections and for stimulating new hair growth. Use three to four drops each of chamomile (Matricaria recutita), rosemary, and sage (Salvia officinalis) in 1 tbs. vegetable oil (for example, flax, borage, or olive). Massage gently into affected area one to two times daily.
Homeopathy
Some of the most common remedies include Ignatia, Pulsatilla, and Sepia. Acute dose is three to five pellets of 12X to 30 C every one to four hours until symptoms are relieved.

Some nutritional experts suggest the dietary utilization of calves liver, brewer's yeast, wheat germ and a daily dose of two tablespoons of granulated lecithin to maximize hair growth, strength and beauty.
Other good food sources for protein include fish, eggs, beans and yogurt. Soy protein has also been found to be helpful in stimulating hair growth. One study of the results of soy on the hair found that it not only strengthened the hair but caused it to grow. A great source of soy is tofu.

[Sorry this was so long - but I plan to follow some of the above to see if it works]

Kris :)

I know a simple, easy, cheap recipe that every asian/indian person has tried and agrees.
Heat up olive, baby, cocunut oil, and massage into your scalp regularly. I used to masage it into my head, sleep on it and wash it out in the morning. It adds shine, body, health, and makes it grow a lot longer. THere is no proven facts or research done on this, but all indian girls have amazingly long hair, when their younger, since they used to oil it ona regular basis. I oiled my hair every day for 2 years, and my hair grew from my neck to my butt.

Okay to the Baby oil, Olive oil, and Coconut oil mixture. I'm all about growing my hair longer faster so, if anyone has more information about this that would be great, like:

1. What is the recipe (I'm assuming equal parts)
2. What type of baby oil is used. (organic, johnson's?)
3. Did you use any other vitamins, hair growth concoctions during this time?

Thanks!!!

get pregnet!!! when you are, your hair grows really fast. My friend just has a 2 year old and a 1 year old, and her hair was a little past her shoulders, and it grew to her butt in less that two years, and she gets trims and haircuts, her mom is a hairdresser. So she always got hair cuts. I guess your hormones are doing something. But, that shouldnt be the only reason you get pregnent.

Don't ever apply any type of OIL on yor hair.
When you wash your hair your shampoo does not know the difference in between your natural hair oils and the gunk you just applied , it strips everything out making your hair drier than before.
If you use a mild shampoo the oil remains on your hair together with particles of that shampoo which will cause dandruff and flat hair syndrome.

Creek,

I don''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''t know if I would agree with you about the oils. For those with dry hair, oil/moisturizer is essential. In order to prevent stripping, one should either do conditioner washes or use a mild shampoo like Kenra, which is very moisturizing and doesn''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''t contain any of the harsh sulfates.

What does shampooing your hair have to do with applying oils? If anything, you should apply natural oils (which is what we are talking about) to your hair to protect it from being stripped dry from harsh shampoos. Yes, I agree that mild shampoos are good, organic shampoos are even better if you have to use a shampoo at all. But oils like coconut and olive actually help your hair and skin retain its moisture which promotes healthy hair growth.

yes and no.
course thick hair reacts fine to heavier oils such as olive oil as a conditioning treatment.
light oils such as meadowfoam and almond are good for fine hair.

i wouldn't put coconut oil on my hair, it can be used, but there are better ones out there--and definitely not mineral oil--it's petroleum based. If you want to use a solid oil, I recommend shea or kokum butter. If you check through this forum, you will see previous posts I have made in regards to conditioning treatments and oils/butters.

I make hair conditioning masks and have studied various oils so I know what I am taking about. I also used to have hair down to my knees but had to cut it off due to injuries I suffered in an auto accident, but I am growing it out again.

Another good one is straight jojoba oil, which in truth is not an oil but a natural wax that has humectant properties -- awesome for hair.
Hair type: fine but thick; natural blonde with 15% grey

Yes take 2.5g of an omega-3 suppliment each day, it is thought to curb hair loss and will give you stong and beautiful hair. Make sure you use a clean source, see: http://www.metabolismadvice.com/omega_3_fish_oil/
