Extensions for Fragile Hair in NYC

I have thin, fragile, straight, fine hair that''s damaged from years of dying it blonde (at-home, single process). Although it''s pretty long now (down to my bra strap), parts of it are shorter, and it takes me forever (plus styling products and rollers) to get it to look good. (As a result, I usually wear clip-on ponytails and falls.) I''ve been considering extensions for some time, as I''d like to add thickness, body, and a few inches to my hair, but I''ve also heard a lot of horror stories.

First, does anyone know if it would be advisable for me to get extensions (given my hair type)? And if so, does anyone know a reputable, talented hair-extensions artist or salon in NYC? Also, what methods would you suggest? And what is a reasonable price to pay?
