world’s most boring, pointless highlights

 couple of days ago I had foil highlights done at a local beauty academy. My natural haircolor is a dark blonde/light brown. Later that day, when I looked in the mirror in natural lighting, I noticed a lot of crappy orange tones at the roots and a yellowish cast to the rest of the highlights. This looked OK in low lighting, but horrible everywhere else. I went back today so the stylist could fix this and she applied a dark purple toner all over my head. This cut out all the yellow and orange tones, but now it looks like I never had anything done at all! The top of my head seems really dark again. I really can't go back in there complaining again without feeling like a jerk...is there any way to lighten back up? Does this toner have a color in it that will fade down?
