Well I been around the net long, short and no hair. This has been on every message board. Long sites going off about it and short side going nuts about. Ok now how about this when a long hair person goes anywhere to get hair cut why not just put Wigs for kids,LOL and this new one that Lane is cutting for just post something. I'm thinking they are all the same 10" or more. That way when a person walks in is going to cut a lot off they just have to look and say well I'm going to cut it anyway so why not. So this way they don't have to go after the long hair people that what to keep it? Gee I guess that wouldn't give the rubber-necks anything to look forward to? Sorry about going long on this. Call me the Green Party.

Guess they don't do that Mike because usually the salon will keep and sell the hair. They don't want to give their customers ideas that will cost them money!

Conspiracy, high-pressure, bullying, c’mon folks! How often does it really happen? I guess, like with anything, there may be some zealots who think anyone with long hair should donate it to charity but I sure haven’t witnessed it. I’ve heard people asked if they have ever considered it. I’ve heard people respond, “No way!” I’ve heard people share how donating was a positive experience for them. I’ve yet to actually witness anyone being bullied into cutting their hair. With the exception of a few of these boards, I can’t think of a single person who has bemoaned being harassed to cut their hair. It does seem to me that there are a number of people on sites like this one that demean any charity that involves cutting ones hair. Just a personal observation.

OK, I'm going to whole-heartedly agree with bnbivi00 in the sense that some, not all, chronic posters add nothing to the discussion. They say stuff like "I love it. The best thing since sliced white bread" after every post. I don't care how you feel about each post, I'll form my own opinion, thank you. I don't mind people who post new information or an occassional opinion. Remember an opinion means nothing if it follows each and every post. But the ones that really get me - and to the credit of this board it rarely appears here - is the occassions when someone tries to supply new info and someone jumps on the poster for the info being old. Please that person is only trying to contribute quality information.

I've been villified on some message boards and kicked off of another for saying as much as bnbivi00 has said and it's good to see that I'm alone. So please, bnbivi00, do me a favor and go to ltah and back me on this cause.

And remember, this isn't a contest to see who can get the most posts.

But how would they lose money. The person still has to pay for the cut. They are just given the cut hair way. And not letting it just fall to the floor. Or trashed. That's all. I didn't know they sold cut hair also. My wife just got a prem/cut for 90. And now her 9" could be used for wig?

Dude, that was totally irrelevant to this thread.  Pots and kettles?

Back on topic.  I'm glad we don't have this so much in the UK (but it *is* increasing) with LoL and whoever else.  It's just irritating when people try to force you to donate.  I you want to you will.  People throw out clothes instead of taking them to charity shops.  People throw out their old mobiles instead of donating them to African doctors.  People are so wasteful and uncharitable with waste that why should people be expected to donate physical parts of themselves.

Unless they want to.

I can't remember who said it (sorry, brain like a sieve) but yes, these people chould grow their own hair to make wigs out of before they get cancer/alopecia/whatever.  That would save a lot of hassle.

I think it is great that Diane and Ann are doing what they are doing to get the word out.  Since we are part of the world of hair and see this stuff every day, you all assume that EVERYONE knows about it.  Believe it or not, there are MANY who have never heard of Locks of Love and even less that have heard of Beautiful Lengths.

Neither Diane or Ann are holding people down and cutting their hair off.  They are not forcing anyone to do anything...they are just getting the word out.  I am really sorry that a few people on this board think it is the worst thing in the world to cut someones hair for ANY reason.  That is what I love about this country.....freedom of speech.  You might not like what others say, but that doesn't mean you have to do it.

And while I am on my soapbox, why do people have to respond to EVERY post on here?  It drives me crazy to see people on this board for less than a year and have hundreds or thousands of posts.  Look how long I have been a part of this board and how many posts I have made.  Funny how I am a Newbie when I have been here longer than most of you who are Seniors.

I am not turning this into a short-versus long debate or anything, but I consider Ms. Lane's donation to be fairly worthless in this regard.  LOL has gotten a bad reputation for making profit off a lot of the hair they receive.  (Am not certain about the reputation of the organization Ms. Lane is giving her hair to.)  And given the fact that extensions can cost somewhere between the hundreds to thousands of dollars, I bet LOL makes a lot of money.

Lane is an actrsss, and chances are her hair has been colored at some point.  Color treated hair is not really good for wigs and/or extensions.  Also, synthetic wigs tend to hold up better in the long run.  So what good does her donation really do?

BTW - it sounds cool that your salon features such specialized stylists.  Kudos to you.

Diane Lane is not only donating her hair. The most important thing she is doing for the institution is to alloy them to use her name in the campaign. So it doesn't matter if her hair is good or not (thought I think she will take care of it in the next months, before the cut).

In the current (April 3) issue of US Weekly there is an interview with Diane Lane about her upcoming haircut.

Diane's Haircut for Charity

The mane event: in July, Diane Lane, 41, will lop off her locks live on NBC's Today show. Why? As spokeswoman for the Pantene Beautiful Lengths campaign (a joint endeavor with the Entertainment Industry Foundations Women's Cancer Research Fund), she's encouraging women to donate their hair to cancer patients in need of wigs. Lane tells us about her role.

Why did you get involved?

Cancer has devestated the lives of many people I know and love. And I like the intimacy of giving a part of myself - literally - and asking others to do so too. That's going to be worth teh shock of cold air on my neck.

Is your long hair long enough to donate?

I've been growing it out since the fall. I have to grow three more inches, but I'm going to get there by July.

Are you anxious?

I'm hoping (my husband Josh Brolin) thinks I'm as cute with two inches of hair as I am with 20.

I was going to say something sarcastic like, "Alert the media," but it seems like Diane's people already have.

Yes, it's nice to do something for cancer patients. And if your reputation can be enhanced along the way...

I guess I compare it to athletes who visit young sick kids in the hospital with TV camera crew in tow. It makes you wonder why they do it in the first place.

Quickie as far as the whole "you post too much" thing. I love the rottentomatoes movie discussion forums, and they dedicate whole threads to nothing other than getting your number of posts higher. They even entitle the threads as such, and I find it kind of hilarious. Ironically, though I lurk there all the time, and am technically a member, I have yet to post.

Diane Lane looks great when her hair is like this:

or this:

http://www.smokingcelebs.com/l/lane19.jpg

or this:

http://www.smokingcelebs.com/l/lane29.jpg

or even like this:

Rod, if Diane Lane really wanted wanted to make a difference, she could:

- Get involved in the fight against cancer

- Donate some of her millions toward cancer research

- Participate in the Relay for Life or other American Cancer Society  fund-raising efforts

- Quit smoking

- Stop smoking in movies

- Speak out against smoking in movies

- Encourage others to quit smoking

Any of those would be way more newsworthy than cutting off one's hair.

By the way, her hair doesn't look so great in this photo:

Not really just showing that she could say for this roll I will not smoke. Still I have found any new pic of her showing off her hair. Most on wire or getty are old or her hair is up.

Kramer, she may do all those things. This is one we know about. And it's
noble to want to help out cancer patients. So, she thinks this is a good
idea. I can't see any reason it isn't. But, you're acting like you're the
emperor of how people should give their time, money, and energy to
charity. You've decided she doesn't have a right to smoke and that is
more important than what she's doing here.

Why do people see it as wrong when a celeb decides to help raise money
for a cause instead of giving it all themselves? (They may do give money
too. We just don't know.)

My step-mother had breast cancer and chose to wear wigs. If that's what
Diane is supporting here, more power to her. I've been involved with
charities that have done substantial things and trivial things. My choice.
This is Diane's choice. If people want to donate hair, they can do that. If
they don't, that's fine too. I feel the same way about all charities.

"Useless?"

A. I thought I was providing some helpful advice. Just because you may disagree with my suggestions doesn't mean they are useless.

B. Typing what you did may have shown you don't think I had the right to say what I said here, but if it's so useless, why even bother? Move on.

C. Everything I wrote is entirely true. Don't you believe a boycott on smoking would have more of an impact than cutting off your hair?

I first noticed Diane Lane (and her hair) in 1979. For those of you too young to remember, she appeared on the cover of Time Magazine.

How's that for a great head of hair?

I'm going to get historical about Diane Lane.  I loved her hair in "A Little Romance" in the 1970s, when it was below waist-length and beautiful.  Well, in the early 80's or so, she starred in "The Cotton Club" set in the flapper age of the 1920's.  So they gave her a short bob haircut.  I still remember reading her interview in my sister's Seventeen magazine.  She said it was traumatic to get 24 inches cut off, so they did it in three stages, 8 inches at a time.  I remember thinking that was a good idea.  So she's gone from long to short before, though quite a while ago.  She could probably look good at any length, with her features.

It's just too bad that your "helpful advice" was so completely off topic. This board is about Celebrity Hair -- not about cancer research, anti-smoking campaigns etc. And who were you providing that "helpful advice" for, anyway? You really think Diane Lane is reading this forum?
