And if we're lucky enough, we'll get 6 months of the should she/shouldn't she argument like the one we have for Ann Curry now!

Oh joy!

That said, should be interesting to see.

I'm going to keep my hair long and make a wig out of my OWN hair if I ever need it. Self-sufficiency.

It is largely a useless gesture of Lane, but whatever floats her boat.

Fading career maybe? Personally, I'm sick of celebs. jumping on this particular bandwagon. Lane's hair has almost always been long and when she cuts it, it grows back real quick. That might not be so for the ordinary people she seems determined to bully into donating their hair. Leave them alone! If they want to donate to a charity (with money or anything else) they'll do so! This guilt trip in the society in which we live is really beginning to freak me out. Charity should be given anonymously and for a valid personal reason--not as a celebrity stunt. Whatever I may have given to charity is my business. I will say, however, that I've never donated blood and would not carry an organ donor card. I do not believe that this personal choice makes me a bad or antisocial person.

I couldnt have said it better myself fatmoogas..

I think if you choose to give to a charity,be it time or money thats awsome. But I totally agree it should be a personal choice. Its wrong to bully people into donating.I wonder why Lol and this new group dont get together, since LOL still has so much hair.If it truly is about helping people.Which the more I hear the more I wonder how much it is for helping out people and not helping themselves?

Quite profound today fat...

The article does seem a bit (just a bit) disengenuous...I'll give Ms. Lane the benefit of the doubt because she is a serious actress.  She has had shorter hair before (I believe no shorter than a short bob), and as an actress, if the next roll calls for long hair...ON with the extensions!

I don't think groups, or organizations should tell people to grow, and cut their hair.  I think, however, that if someone wants to cut their hair short, and there will be an available ponytail, why not send it on to LOL or whoever can put it to good use.  Telling people to grow and cut is like putting the cart before the horse, imho.

As for donating blood, not everyone can.  I have donated over 3 gallons of blood in my life, but can no longer because of some medication I'm taking.  I feel more people should, but it IS a personal choice, and I will not judge you or think any more or less of you (or anyone else) for your own personal choice.

I said to myself that I wouldn't get into this topic with Ann and now Diane but I just feel I have to now.  I have been cutting hair for 10+ years now and I am actually a short hair specialist (yes, our salon is big enough to have specialist like this).  I can't tell you how many times I have had someone come in and tell me they wanted to cut off all of their hair.  I would tell them about Locks of Love or Wigs for Kids and they had never heard of it.  After I cut it off, they would reply "If I had known about this, I would have done this years ago".

I think it is great that Diane and Ann are doing what they are doing to get the word out.  Since we are part of the world of hair and see this stuff every day, you all assume that EVERYONE knows about it.  Believe it or not, there are MANY who have never heard of Locks of Love and even less that have heard of Beautiful Lengths.

Neither Diane or Ann are holding people down and cutting their hair off.  They are not forcing anyone to do anything...they are just getting the word out.  I am really sorry that a few people on this board think it is the worst thing in the world to cut someones hair for ANY reason.  That is what I love about this country.....freedom of speech.  You might not like what others say, but that doesn't mean you have to do it.

And while I am on my soapbox, why do people have to respond to EVERY post on here?  It drives me crazy to see people on this board for less than a year and have hundreds or thousands of posts.  Look how long I have been a part of this board and how many posts I have made.  Funny how I am a Newbie when I have been here longer than most of you who are Seniors.

That's been mentioned a few times, but for some reason it always entertains me to see it pointed out.  And don't feel bad bnbivi00.  Check out my status over there to the left and remember that I'm the reason the board even came into existence in the first place.

Your right everyone is intitled to their own opinion, which is why I posted mine.As you can see from my sig. pic I'm not anti short hair.I have had my hair short all my life.I have only had long hair once. And i was glad to cut it off.I think if someone wants to cut their hair short, awsome as I frequent the short hair board as much as the long hairboard.I just like hair.My point is alot of people with longhair have been chastised for not donating their hair.Thats not right.I have seen it firsthand. These individuals really valued their hair, but felt pressure from others to cut for this cause. It would have been fine if it had been of their own free will, but it wasnt. They were made to feel selfish for wanting to keep it for themselves?!    Like I stated in my initial response, donating to charities is wonderful, but it should be a choice.I donate to charities all the time, and will continue to but only when and how i see fit.Free will is wondeful.

And yes fatmoogas, that is me sans extensions.I missed my own hair so i decided to go natural.

Still miss your column, wish you would start it up again (just wishful thinking!)  I average about 3 posts a week...is that too much?

The salon industry must have discovered that their revenues have been declining in recent years.  Either that, or the supply of certified haircutters has risen.  In either case, and between LoL proselytes and celebrity-centered circus whackathons, there seems to be in the air a distinct effort underway to rid America of the "blight" of long hair.  Well, as far as I care for their master plan, they can take their message and stuffit.

IMO, the so-called "beauty" industry is extraordinarily ugly.  Ironic, huh?

What?

There aren't enough long haired celebrities out there? Is there a shortage of long hair out there? I had no idea! I feel bad for all you LH enthusiasts with no long haired celebrities to look at anymore.

You have my deepest sympathies.

You all sound like Republicans arguing that there isn't enough leeway for large corporations anymore.

Who made that claim?  Oh, wait, you did.

It's not about celebrities looking pleasant (in whatever way that's defined by the individual).

Not at LoL.  Just ask them for a tour of their whairhouse.  They'll show you a mighty surplus.  Unless they've sold it all.  There must be a big demand for extensions these days.

And here I was suggesting that haircuts done with charitable intent shouldn't be commercially exploited... which one of us is the Republican?

A charity bullies and guilts people! Stop the presses.

That's unfortunate, but it's what many charities do. If any of us ran a charity,
we might have to do the same. I've been involved with a few charities and I
know they made real guilt sells in their mailers. I don't think people should
be guilted into donating their hair, but these charities are doing something
nice. While some have drawn the conclusion that Locks of Love has more
hair than they need, does Beautiful Lengths?

Nicely done Bubba. You nailed it. Although I'm betting St. Ann and St. Diane would disagree with you.

You talk about freedom of speech and then want to shut down those who want to talk. No contradiction there, eh?

We don't really have this whole Locks of Love concept in Europe so I am slightly confused by what a massive deal it seems to be over your side of the pond.  For an outsider, it seems like Diane Lane and Ann Curry (whoever she is) are raising the profile of these charities and in my opinion, that's a positive way to exploit their fame.  Of course there's an element of self-promotion involved, but their efforts can, at the end of the day, help someone in need, then I think we can do better than denigrate their actions.

On a personal note, I would love to give blood, but am unable to do so, because I am quite severely anaemic.  Even since I put on weight (I used to be super-skinny, which also depleted my blood), my iron levels are still way too low to donate.  I think that people who donate blood are doing a BRILLIANT job :)

Kramer,

I am not asking you or anyone to not speak your mind.  This is a board where people can speak their mind and that is the whole point of this board.  I am just suggesting that you pick your battles.  EVERYONE on here knows what you all think about long hair and what others think about short hair.  I just choose to let people speak their mind without blasting every subject on this board if they think differently than I do.  Don't hate people for wanting to do good and help others out by donating their hair.  Don't hate people for wanting to get the message out that people can do this (not forcing them to cut their hair).  That is all I am asking.

Let's all agree to disagree and move on.
