Is there really such a thing as your own hair being too thick that you can't get extensions?
My hiar is thick but short, above my shoulders. I had a stylist with 20 years exp tell me that she would not do my hair cause it woul end up looking like a mullet with a mushroom head. She does the strand by strand and glue technique.
Is this really true? I was devastated to hear this. I plan on having a gal on this board do my hair with shrinkies.
In my not so humble opinion of doing extensions for 15 years, I would have to agree that if your hair is very thick extensions may not be a good idea.
The problem is that you have to match your natural density to make the extensions blend in seamlessly, so if you're hair is thick, you got to pile on a ton of extension hair to not end up with the infamous mushroom head.
And if your hair is thick and above your shoulders, that is a double whammy, since thick hair in that length really wants to 'stick out' since it has so much volume. It is hands down the most challenging scenario in extensions, and frankly I usually turn down jobs like that because to make it look good, I have to pile on so much hair and the client usually can't or doesn't want to deal with a ton of hair on their already thick hair.
Not all that said, if you still really want extensions, I'd suggest to you getting wefts. They provide better coverage and will conceal your hair easier. Strands can work, but I would guess that almost every inch of your natural hair from nape to up the the tippy top of your hair would have to have extensions to get it to blend right. If your stylist is not too experienced in extensions, it will probably be a disaster.
I also consulted with a stylist that sews on wefts. He did a demo on me and I liked it. Plus, it seems less invasive to my hair, if you know what I mean.
He said is would fold the weft or double it over. That makes sense in this scenario, doesn' it?
I have very thick hair and had a blunt bob. When I did fusion it was very hard to get my hair not to look like a mullet. I had way too much hair. I had lots of layers put in and had to curl it for it too look right. Wearing it straight was not an option. Also the hair in the back of my head was not enough. You could see the line from my real hair most of the time. I just got a weave with sewn on tracks. It looks so much better. No mullet head and coverage is great all over. I have 4 and 1/2 doubled tracks and the last 1/2 row is high up on my head so it blends better

I dont think your hair is THAT short to where you'd have a mullet. Your hair is definetly longer than hers http://www.haircandy.net/41129551_l-wm.jpg and her outcome was great.
