I've been experimenting with my hair for about a year. (greys, gotta cover!). My natural color is dark blonde to light brown.
I started with getting semi permanent (demi is it called?) at the the salon but it turned out too dark. (the color was "dark blonde" but it really turned out a light medium brown).
Then it started turning reddish. So after a few over-the-counter dyes, I finally found one that I love. I just dyed my hair 1/2 hour ago. It's Loreal Paris 7BB (Dark Beige Blonde). It's a "Cooler" color.
It knocked out most of the red tints in my hair (yay) however from the roots until about an inch down, it's lighter and still shows red. It looks a little silly now but it's better than what I started with. I LOVE the color except the root area .....
So, I know most people will tell me to get this professionally fixed. Say I don't want to. What would be my best bet? I need to darken the top a little near the roots and "get the red out". It's not red red, but has that red tint.
I don't need my whole head done. I don't want to ruin the "good" part.
Do I buy the same color and just do the roots? Or do I buy a slightly darker color (COOLER again) and do the roots with that?

Here are a few pictures. The really bright red was with the flash and in more sunlight. It looks exaggerated. The picture on the right is sideways but best reflects what is going on.
The pictures above were all taken within the same few minutes, just at different levels of light.
Oh here is a bigger picture of the thumbnail above on the right, in the correct direction!

?? I did dye my hair with Loreal Paris 7BB (Dark Beige Blonde). For some reason I'm pulling more red at the top (I have been 'redder' ever since I started dying it about a year ago).
My question is how to best correct the red tint at the top/crown.
from your pics it looks pretty...not a harsh line or anything, i think we are all very critical of ourselves....it would be very tricky to apply color to the roots and be lucky enough for it to match the ends, so if you do go this route definately test a small patch first........if it were me, and with wanted 'less red at the root area' i'd try a violet shampoo up against my scalp first....what you have is tricky, sorry i cant help much!

Nursie - Thanks for the compliment and the support.
I noticed today while in the car that the sunlight makes some pieces look a little copper-like. Yet when I am in lower light, I don't see the 'reddish' (or copper) tint as much.
I'm going to leave it. I will try a violet shampoo like you suggested. There is a Sallys very close to me.
I'm going to have to do something when my roots start growing in though, because the hair on top is also lighter than my natural color. Perhaps I'll try to do just my roots plus the lighter/redder part in a shade darker (light ash brown maybe, instead of "dark beige blonde") ..... and pull it through the rest of my hair later in the process. Not sure if that will do the trick. I don't know how to make the color "stick" to the top of my head. I've read that the warmth from the scalp can alter the color during the coloring process. Maybe if I start with a cold head ... LOL
Not sure if a different developer (other than what comes out of the grocery-store box, which I guess is 10?) ..would help....

I know it's not good to dye your hair twice in one week, but I did anyway. This time I used Loreal Natural Match Light Ash Brown 6C (Cooler).
Got rid of most of the red, at least it's not as bright. But the top two inches of my hair still lighter than the length, which turned out much darker than I expected. My hair, except the top is very porous! Also, I pulled through at the end and I guess missed some of the back of my hair!
So the back looks highlighted, somewhat, the front is dark and the top is lighter.
However, I think I'm closer to my natural color (parts of my hair anyway) than I have been in a while.
I washed what seemed like 90 times afterwards. I used a clarifier, and some liquid Wisk !!! (no bleach of course) This is 'permanent' color but Natural Match has no ammonia. So I have no idea if washing and 'pooing helped at all.
Now I need a good cut and I'm good to go. I think the next time I need a touch up (due to roots) I'll have a salon do it. Thing is last time I got a demi at the salon it turned out too dark ..... and reddish. I've tried two different salons.
Someone tell me that it will fade somewhat! Some of the pieces in the front are so dark, I would call them dark brown!
Overall though, I'm not unhappy. Maybe even happier than I was a few hours ago. I don't know, have to get used to it. At least the warmth is mostly out (except, again, the top, but it's a darker warmth at least).
I'll post pictures ... I just took some but it's better in the sunlight than with the flash ...
PS I conditioned my hair to death too. It's so squeaky clean AND pretty soft and shiny now too. So I haven't ruined it. But I need it cut, I haven't had a hair cut since October '06!!! I'm going to get bangs (I spent many years with them) to cut out some of the very dark pieces. And I have some breakage near the forehead anyway so the bangs will blend that hopefully. My hair is past shoulder length except the front which is somewhat framed and I have some nasty layers that are almost grown out.

Here is the new hair. I just got it cut today and the stylist touched up the color (AGAIN!!! But very gently).
It's hard to really see the color, it looks much darker than this picture, actually.
Here's another picture in different light. The real color is somewhere between the two pictures.
After all this coloring and treating, my hair does not have the same "weight" it used to. I was asking my stylist alot of questions .... from now on I'm going to let her do the color. I asked her how to get back to my natural color (which is somewhat like the above picture, I think) and she said instead of coloring, we'll foil the greys from now on.
So I'm going to just condition the heck out of my hair until it gets back to the shape it used to be in (looks fine in the pictures, but feels rather weightless and weak now).
I used Nexxus Emergencee last night and I must say that I'm getting ALOT less breakage since using it!!! I'm happy with that.
