I have always had fairly thin/fine hair.  I recently had some health problems and lost a lot of hair though.  I never knew it could be this thin...what I had before would seem so thick now...I would love to have that back.  I am so embarrassed by how thin it is (it looks like a mullet because most of the hair that is left is in the back...there isn't much at all on the front and sides Cry) that I will only go out with it in a ponytail and bun (a tiny, tiny bun).  The only time I wear it down now is around the house.  I am supposed to be the maid of honor in my sister's wedding this summer.  I am so embarrassed at the thought of being in pictures with my hair like this though.  I didn't want to get extensions because my own hair is finally starting to grow back and I didn't want to damage it, but I think it is the only way I will feel comfortable being in the wedding.
My hair is pretty straight and about to my bra strap in length.

So... What extensions will cause the *least* amount of damage to my natural hair?  I would like to wear them while my own hair grows back in and then stop.

Which will look the most natural considering I don't have very much hair?  Will it be hard to hide the attachments if I don't have much hair on the top and sides?

If possible, I would like to avoid chemicals for application and removal as I have some chemical sensitivities.

Thanks so much for all of your help!!!!!!!!!!  Sorry this is so long! :)

Have you thought of clip ins for the wedding day - they are awesome and you can have it styled however - up or down.....

I did think of that and am tempted.  However, I would like to have something a little more durable and long-lasting since at this point I am embarrassed to even wear my hair down outside of the house.  If it is something I'm going to want to wear everyday, I was thinking it might be worth getting extensions put in.  do clip-ons only work well for layered/styled hair?  I like to wear my hair long and straight so am not sure how that would work.  Is it hard to match color with a clip-in?  I am open to hearing about it all! :)

These days you can get a clip in for every type of hair- I alternate between clipin for a few months then fusion or glued weft extensions. I choose to do this because I have fine thin hair, and I do feel that wearing the regular extensions causes thinning when I wear them over a long period of time.

I wore fusion extensions for 2 years, reinstalling every 8 weeks or so, but I felt that  my hair thinned quite a bit over that period of time, so I switched to clips for a year , and the thickness came back.  Now I alternate.

This is just my experience , I sure others have differing opinion.

Check out  lookoflove.com for human hair clip ins and falls .  They are a little pricey , but they last a long time and are soo easy to wear.

I wore a clip in for my daughters wedding in a half up and half down style  that my real hair could NEVER have pulled off. It looked great.

I would highly recommend micro rings chick they are fab but in your case I'd have them removed every month to start with to check there is no more damage x

This is one of the ones I have that I wear daily....
they have a layered version and then a companion type peice that you an wear together  or by them selves.  It took me about a year of looking at the site to decypher all the choices, but it's worth it.

So if I was going to alternate, but wanted to have the actual extensions in for the time of the wedding, what would you recommend I start with?  Brand/application method/etc.  I live in a very small town so am probably going to have to travel no matter what I choose.  For this reason, extensions are not very practical for the long-run, but I think it would be worth it for the wedding.  So...if you could choose anything, what would you recommend I get? :)

Thanks so much for the link...I was very overwhelmed when i went to the site! :)  With a clip, is it hard to get an exact color/texture match to your own hair?  Im just afraid that you would be able to tell the difference between the clip hair and my hair.  My hair was always very healthy/shiny until I had the recent health problems and it is a lot duller/drier now.  I am just worried about it blending well...plus, I would have noooo idea what color to order.  I definitely do want to try it though.  I think I will browse through that site and order a couple things just to give it a shot! :)

for the extensions, I am not 100% sure, but I think that I want to wear it mostly long...possibly pull the top part back and leave the rest down.

If my hair is very fine and thin, will the clip have trouble staying in place?

They are super helpful if you call them, and you can order a color ring to get a good match. My hair is very fine caucasion hair, brown color and I can get a perfect match.

I have never used microrings myself, but based on Amandas reccomendation I would like to try them.

I have used and been happy with keratin bonds or shrinkies....

This is another site thsat sells the look of love items, they have good before and after pictures...

I have never had trouble with the pieces staying in. The directions usually say to tease a small spot before attaching the clip in . I usually do this and they never move..  I am  a high school teacher, and believe me I DON"T want a hair disaster in forn t of my class. But, in the years since I've been wearing them, it's never happened.

Sometimes I ( and this is true with the strand by strand extensions as well), I get nervous and think something is "showing" but it never really is when I check in the mirror.

BTW- my hair is very fine naturally, and while it has thickened up since I started wearing the clipins, when I first started wearing them my hair was very thin as well.Approve

Why not go with a lace front wig? To me, it's basically the same thing as extensions but rather than going through your hair, you can go around it, outside the hairline and glue it on. Then you won't have to worry about pulling on your own hair. I'm pleasantly shocked the more that I'm learning about them (I want to try them too!) and also who wears them (Beyonce, Tyra Banks, lots of celebs).

If you're interested in doing clip ins, I'd reccemend making them yourself. You can get a set of wefted hair, dye it to match your own hair exactly, and size it more appropriately to your own head. There are quite a few tutorials on this site, as well as other forums like extensions101.com and many other stores that ladies on here and on that site run.

welcome to the world of extensions, defiantely roam around as many links and sites as you can, it can be overwhelming at first, but it's always a good idea to see whats out there! :)
goodluck

WOW!!!  So many options..this is very overwhelming to say the least!  K...let me add this and see if it helps narrow it down..hehe!  I am not trying to get thick hair at all.  Everyone that knows me knows that I naturally have thin hair...I am fine with that and want to keep it that way...I just want to have enough hair to not be embarrassed of it any more.  How can I get the most natural looking, what most of you would consider pretty thin, hair?  Don't know if that helps narrow it down at all..there is so much to learn!! :)

I would recommend you to try the Protac method. It's one of the easiest method for firts time users like you, and the tape is unexpensive. Your install with Protac is supposed to last between 4 and 6 weeks, and then you can re-use the hair.

You can see toturials with pictures on this forum and on Sherrie's forum (hairextensions101.com) to see how to put Protac in. (you can also use other kinds of tape)
I wore sew-in, fusion, microrings, Protac and now I use Liquid Gold.

As for the hair, if you want to waer it for several months, I recommend you Bohyme. Check out hairsisters.com or sherrie's site or ebonyline.com for good prices. (between approximately $80 and $150 for 4oz, depending on the color, and size)
If you want to try Bohyme, you should get the color ring to find a good match for your hair. Then you have to pick a texture, silky straight, wavy, french refined etc. This hair is gorgeous.
If you only want to wear the hair for like a month, maybe you should give a try to synthetic hair, I know there are a lot of good products in thermofiber now, Amm's synthetic thermofiber looks amazing, some girls love Paltikhaar too.

wow...I guess I never thought of doing it myself.  that seems a little scary to me. :)  maybe one of you could come to colorado and do it for me...hehe!?  :)  I will look at the links and see what I think though.  I'll try and get some pictures of my natural hair today and see what you all think.  I guess I'm worried about the attachments showing since I won't have much natural hair to cover up anything...most of the hair that I have left is in the back, not much on the front, top or sides.  What method leaves the most invisible attachments that wouldn't show through on fine hair?  HOw would you recommend finding a stylist?  I don't feel comfortable doing it and my mom and sisters are too busy to learn...otherwise I would love to go that route.  I will look into the hair types too.  I do plan on wearing it for a while so I would like to get some high quality hair.
How do you get the tape out? I have a lot of chemical sensitivities so anything that can go in and out without the use of strong chemicals is a definite plus!
Thanks for ALL  of your help!!!  You guys have been soooooooooo helpful!

I don't want to overwhelm you even more but....Here's what I think...

I've been wearing extensions for a little short of 2 years now, was trying to grow my hair out, before, most hairdressers wouldn't touch my hair, because it was so damaged, now, everyone I go to tells me how thick and healthy my hair is!

I've never did fusion before, but with everything else, I think if you do it right, take care of it, and remove it right, there shouldn't be any damage! And actually, now I am shocked at how much thicker and longer my hair is, so I would completely suggest extensions for you.

If you are REALLY thin on the tops and sides, then lots of methods of extensions, may not work well for you. Microlinks will poke through, same with fusion bonds, and even clip ins or tapes, you need enough hair to cover the bonds.

If that's the case, you could always get skin wefts, that make it look like hair is growing actually out of your head.

I would say, if it is REALLY thin on top, to get a full head sew-in, with a closure. I have a client who has this, from what I can tell, it seems like she has next to no hair, just enough to braid, and I couldn't even tell from looking at her that she had a weave, it really looked amazing!

So basically, if you aren't really thin on top, you could do pretty much anything, I love the tapes a lot, and microlinks. Just try to do one install before the wedding, and go out and take pictures, one time with micros someone took a pic of the top of my head (duuno why?!) and it looks like tiny bugs all over my head! So I was just thankful that only people who knew about my extensions saw those!!!
