QuoteReplyTopic: Ever use anything besides acetone or orange oil? Posted: June 04 2007 at 11:13am
I am looking into getting some skin wefts for my sister's wedding next month. I have a lot of chemical sensitivities though and am concerned about not being able to use the acetone or orange oil to remove them. Are there any other more gentle ways to get them out? Would using a straight oil (like olive oil or something similar) loosen them up enough to get them out? I *really* don't want to damage my natural hair so if they would be hard to get out without the acetone then I am not sure if this will work for me.
Thanks so much for your help! :)
I am also sensitive to the orange oil, which is a harsh petrochemical, by the way. In the advertising of some brands of the oil, it says it's 'natural' or 'organic' to imply that it's safe. After getting chemical burns from it and it also has burned some of my clients, I did some research on it.
It is a petroleum based product. They can call it 'natural' or 'organic' since it's made with a carbon based atom.
Stay away from that stuff.
Here's what I have been doing for removals. This works well for skin weft removal too:
I put olive oil in the hair, and then use a flat iron on low - medium heat to heat over the oil (and the weft) as it heats, it loosens up the glue and the weft slides out. Once the wefts are out, if there's more glue in the hair, I will repeat with oil and heat until it all combs out easily.
And under no circomestances should you ever heat the orange oil. It will produce toxic smoke!
You can also try using a thick cheap conditioner the same way as the olive oil.
There are actually some truely natural orange oils out there, but they are typically more expensive as they are made from orange extracts and citrus oils. This can still be harsh on the skin however.
That's exactly what I was hoping for...I will try the olive oil or conditioner then! I'm so glad to hear that I won't have to use the orange oil or acetone...I'm pretty sure that my skin wouldn't agree with those!
Do you feel like you lose more hair using the oil or conditioner than you would using acetone? I want to cause the least damage to my hair as possible since I am trying to grow it back out.
Thanks so much for the help! :)

The hair you see comming out isn't nessecarily damage. Your hair sheds naturally around 100+ hairs a day, but it is trapped by wearing extensions so when you remove the extensions the hair that was alrady shed but had been trapped gives the illusion of loosing hair. I've used the orange oil and the condition/olive oil methods, I saw no difference. Any true damage that might occur from removal is from inexperience and rushing the process. Be sure to SATURATE the bonds and smush the oils into them. I took a half an hour per tape bond I had to remove with conditioner and olive oil. It took MUCH longer than orange oil or acetone, so you need to be paitent with it.
Thanks for the time estimate...I didn't realize it would take that long so I may have rushed it if I didn't know! I will make sure to take my time and be very patient. I'm glad to hear that you didn't see any difference in the amount of damage though..that's great!
What tape or glue have you tried this with? Do you think it would work for any or do I need to make sure to purchase certain ones? Which one would you most recommend? I would just die of embarrassment if one happened to fall out at the wedding or reception...is there a high likelihood of that? How far in advance would you recommend putting them in? the wedding is july 7 btw. I want to make sure that they are going to work and get used to them, but I don't want to have had them in for so long that I risk them falling out at the wedding, know what I mean?
Thanks for all of the help!!! :)

I agree with bunnyw. Take your time and be patient and allow whatever product you are going to use for remaoval to WORK. Being impatient and pulling on the bonds to remove them could surely cause damage. Anything oily or thick emollient condtioners should work. But these will take longer than the citrus removers or acetone. I would suggest having more than one type of remover on hand, in case one dont work you have something to fall back on. Not all removers work for everyone.
I used supertape and LG brought from HE101/Sherrie :) It held up GREAT. I had them in for around 4 weeks with my last install and they weren't quite ready to come out :) It seems like different ones work better for different people, but I really liked the combination as far as tapes and glues go for me.
Putting them in maybe a week or so before would be alright. that way you can get used to them and adjust anything you need to before the wedding. There shouldn't be any major slipping at that time either. Sometimes the ends will get a little bit loose, but if you put a little LG on you can fix it with out having to take anything out. I don't think there is a high risk at all of them randomly comming loose - and even if they do at the last minute, its easily fixable, even with a safety pin! (i know sounds crazy, theres a thread on diyextensions.net that explains it, do a forum search for safety pin and it should come up)

the tapes have good hold, they shouldnt randomly fall out. In fact mine are still usually quite secure at 6 weeks. A spot or two may get loose but not an entire row. I add a little LG to the tapes and at 7 weeks I have to really be patient with removal becuase they are still very secure.
Anyone about removing the bonds that are flattened? I recently put in a few installs by socap and now that I took the first install out, it was really hard to loosen them up! I was so bummed! I thought it would be so easy to just crunch the flat bond a few and turn it and crunch it a few more times and it was still really hard to get them out... The remover smells just like acetone and I only had one bottle and I needed more so I used regular pure acetone. Worked about the same. Also, from past experience with other methods, the orange oil didn't really do anything for me... Any suggestions from anyone who flattens the bonds??? Thanks!

Try 100% acetone nail polish remover Onyx Professional is my favorite. I believe you can buy it at Sally's.
Would you recommend the Protac or the supertape if I want to make sure that they don't fall out but also be able to take them out with oil or conditioner?
Also, my hair is brown (someone said that they thought it was a 6...I have no idea as I've never done this before)...will the LG show through since my hair is so fine if I were to put it on top of the weft on the front ones? Are there other adhesives that would be better for brown hair? I also really want to avoid having little glue boogers. I am very short so anything that is going on in my hair will be visible to most everyone! That is why I want to make sure that it isn't noticeable and there aren't any problems...well, that and the fact that I will be in hundreds of pictures that someone will have forever!
oh yeah...i've heard that the tapes can get kind of gooey and sticky in hot weather...do you think i'll have a problem with this? the wedding is outdoors and it will most likely be very warm at that time of year down here in the desert. Thanks so much for all of the help! :)

Any of the extended wear tapes will work. I personally prefer the supertape. But really its just a matter of preference. Also the supertape is less shiny than protac. But protacs split backing paper make them a little easier to handle as the backing can sometimes be a little tricky at first. If you want added security, You could add a little bit of LG to the tapes on the side that you apply against your head. Just a few dots along the tape, or a very light bit of LG along the tape will give extra security and hold.
My hair is pretty fine too especially in the crown area and I dont have any issues with them showing. There are lots of little tricks for that too. I use what I call a 'makeshift seamless' weft for my crown area. And frenchie has her own little tricks for the crown area too.
Whether or not you experience stickiness is hard to say. It seems to vary with each person. I never get gooey or melty gunk from the tapes. A little stickiness at most by the end of the install. Although some people get it quite badly. I think it depends on your hair type, my hair is very DRY, and I blowdry the tape area very well after showering, try to not wash EVERYDAY, and I try to stay away from very heavy, thick shampoos and conditioners and try to keep them off the tapes as much as possible.
You could always go for a LG install as another option. But with your dark hair, you might want to dye the LG a darker brown with a little bit of rit fabric dye. With LG you can get the glue 'boogers' that you mention. LG is another good option though although may be a little more tricky for a first install. But still do-able.
If you are going to use skin wefts, you would only apply the tape to the underside of the the skin wefts. No adhesives/tapes on the top, you wouldnt have any worries of tape showing through.
Thanks so much for posting the links...very helpful! Your hair is gorgeous, btw!
Which would be more invisible...skin wefts or the makeshift seamless wefts? I am so nervous that everyone will be able to see them (I am very short!) that I want to use the best possible option. For the front ones, is it best to just have the tape underneath or should I put tape or LG on the top to stick the hair to? Any places you would recommend ordering from? I have very fine hair if that makes a difference for matching texture. Do you know anyone that does custom color matching with good quality hair?
Thanks so much for all the help!

bCall your stylist to see if she will do it and for how much. Let her know that they're skin wefts not regular wefts.
You should place your order now. WWW.MYMANEATTRACTIONS.COM sells 3yds. 16" for $160. It comes in black but you should be able to get them dyed. www.extensionwarehouse.com skin wefts(under 1/4" bonding extensions) come in 30 colors so you don't have to worry about dyeing those.
You also need to order your tape now so that you won't have to worry about delays in shipping. Also order you pony tail now so you'll have it for a back up.
Install you skin wefts no later than a week ahead so you can remove them if you don't like them and you can start practicing with your pony tail.
oh i cant say that i like the quality of the skin wefts i received from extensionwarehouse....it was really dry skraggly hair, the skin weft part was nice, but the hair was crap...it was color #24 blonde so maybe it was just that it had bleached to hell and back
lotta talkin 'bout hair n other stuff: http://www.diyextensions.net/
