It is no secret that curly hairstyles can sometimes be difficult to manage. However, once you understand the basics of curly hair and how to manage it, you will be on your way to creating the sexiest and most appealing curly hairstyles. Most important is reading the curl pattern of your hair. Everyone with curly hair has a pattern of curl which is uniquely their own. Ignoring or working against this patter could result in a disastrous curly hairstyle.

For short to medium length curly hairstyles, a layered cut is the best option. A layered cut will give your curls a solid structure and will create a soft and manageable curly hairstyle. For those with very thick, curly hair, frequent cuts of your curly hairstyle are essential in managing weight. Too much weight comes when your hair gets too long. Always be sure keep up on your curly hairstyle by visiting your stylist at least every six weeks.

So how do you find the right stylist for your curly hairstyle? First, understand that not all stylists will be able to work with curly hairstyles. Do not be afraid to call around to salons and ask for a stylist who has experience with curly hair or even a curly hairstyle specialist. If the salon you speak to gives you a hard time when you ask these questions, then immediately move on to the next salon.

Maintaining your curly hairstyle properly at home is key to keeping your style looking it’s best. Do not wash your hair every day. You may rinse your hair in the shower but curly hair should ideally be washed only one to two times per week. Curly hair occurs naturally because of the way proteins in the hair bond. Regular shampooing removes these important proteins and causes curls to straighten with each wash. Less frequent shampooing will definitely contribute to your best curly hairstyle possible.

Products which are designed for curly hair and curly hairstyles are essentials when styling your hair. Always try to use products that are designed specifically for curly hair. Shampoos and conditioners developed for curly hairstyles will enhance, support and protect your curly hair rather than weigh it down. In addition, styling products designed for curly hair will enhance your look and keep your curls in the best shape possible. The following are some useful tips for styling your curly hair style.

Texturing Hair Choose a styling mousse, balm or gel specialized for curly hair styles and distribute a small amount of product through your partially dried hair. This technique will create more volume and texturize your look. As you blow dry your hair, use your fingers to lift, tousle and tease your hair in various areas, working from the underneath up.

It also helps to scrunch your hair using your fingers as you dry your hair. To increase fullness, direct airflow from the dryer starting at your ends going towards your roots. Some blow dryers come with a finger diffuser attachment, which is also beneficial for curly hairstyles. To finish off your look, you can use a small curling iron to groom your ends. Be sure work a bit of styling cream or paste through your curly hair with your fingers to create more texture.

Blowdrying your hair smooth After washing your hair, try to remove as much excess moisture from your hair as possible. Eliminating most of the moisture will reduce your blowdrying time significantly, in turn reducing damage to your hair. Apply a styling product designed for straightening hair evenly throughout your hair to increase smoothing results. Section your hair with clips and pin the top layers out of the way at first. Start working with the underneath sections and let hair down in additional sections as you move along with drying. Always be sure you fully dry the section you are working on before pulling down another, as hair will revert to curly if you skip this.

Move your blowdryer from root to end, using a hairbrush to guide you. We recommend using a large paddle brush for achieving a smooth and silky look. Upon completion of drying a section, use only your fingers or a brush to touch your hair. Continue this process until all sections of your hair are dry. Spray your hair with an oil or shine gloss to prevent frizz and boost shine.

Using Heated Rollers and Hot Sticks Heated rollers and hot sticks are only effective on hair that is perfectly dry. Also, most hair types take to heated rollers and hot sticks much better if the hair has not been washed recently.

When wrapping pieces of hair around a roller, wrap one and a half times to give lift and volume, while not allowing the roller to fall out. If you wrap the hair more times, the tighter the curl will be.

Lightly spray your entire head with hairspray. When your rollers indicate they are hot enough for set, start rolling from the crown and be sure to use the right size roller for your hair length (shorter = smaller/longer = larger). Use a fine toothcomb to divide your hair into even sections and clip those that you are not currently working with. Take your first section, comb it smooth and lightly spray again with hairspray before putting the roller on. Also, a good rule to follow is that the section of hair you are working with should never be wider than the instrument. This will ensure the correct tension of hair and a better curl.

For short hair, put a piece of paper between the roller and the hair to help keep the rollers in place. Never roll the hair too tight. To avoid the fish hook look at the ends, pull the ends until they disappear when rolling the hair around the roller.

Work through your entire head, down the back and then the sides. Finish setting your hair in the front. Whatever direction you roll your hair is what direction the end curl will be. For a spiral look, you can twist the section of your hair before wrapping it around the roller.

After all the rollers have been set in your hair, try to sit still and not move around too much. It is often movement, which causes the rollers to come loose. Once the rollers have cooled, start taking them out, in the same order you put them in. Use your fingers to lightly loosen your curls for a more natural look. Finish your curly hair style with hairspray.
