I left the 5th hairdresser I've been to in 6 months today with orange highlights yet once again, and drove to Sally's to pick up some powder bleach to do my own dang hair tonight.  I actually have naturally light ash brown  hair and I've been coloring it for so long that I just can't get that base back.  I just want my natural hair color with ashy highlights all over.  I found a lady who could get the ash blonde I wanted, but the lowlights would turn so reddish, which took away from the ash blonde.  I am just so frustrated I could cry.  Angry  I keep trying someone new, they tell me they understand what I'm looking for but no one can get my hair the way I want it!!  So right now what I think I need is some ash lowlights, but I'm trying to figure out how to get them in my hair without having them end up golden... I'm so sick of pouring $ down the shampoo sink!  Any advice would be sincerely appreciated!!

What type of cream developer are you mixing with the bleach packets?

They come in levels 10-50.

Level 10, I believe comes with semi-permanent hair dye.

Level 50 cream developer will remove black hair dye.

The haircolor packets you got should say something like: the un-color system, if hair color removal is your goal.

I speak from personal experience, but maybe this will help you, as my hair is now medium ash blonde, no brass, and I haven't lost any hair through the proscess. My hair is still one single legnth. I can still flat iron it.

My natural hair color is dark brown/black, more on the black side.

I know nothing about doing highlights, I can only tell you how to work on un-highlighted hair, and make it a uniform color.

One more note: My hair is all natural growth, so I use Loreal/ Feria Extra Bleach blonding kits  from the drug store. I have alot of hairclips so that I can bleach very small sections at a time. I have 2 mirrors, so I can view the back of the head.

I bleached small sections of my hair at a time: inner back 1st. If it was too orangey, I waited a couple of days, and re-did the same exact section. Once it turned into a single yellowish color, I moved on to the next sections and followed the same proscess, until I was ready to do the top portion of the back of the head.

I'm a student anyway. Since I'm not accountable for how I look, I figure it wouldn't hurt to have the back of my head blonde, and the sides not blonde, for one day.

Anyway, I moved on to the sides, and repeated the entire proscess: inner sides, to the outer portion, never moving on to the next portion, until the previous one is yellowish.

One more note on the proscess:  After I finished bleaching each section of my hair, I changed gloves before taking off another hairclip, and working on another section.

Once all my hair turned blonde, I washed, and conditioned with Nioxin system 7. After the hair dried, it was ready for fresh hair color.

So my hair did not change from dark brown/black to  medium ash blonde overnight; its an extremely slow proscess but worth the wait.

If you want to know why I did not get it done professionaly, is because I already tried. But alot of salons are hesitant.

I believe the reason they're hesitant is because dark brown-black hair is the hardest to bleach, and any hair dresser would have no way of knowing how my hair would come out.

The proscess is so harsh on the hair, that if the bleach is not applied correctly, you can lose more hair, than the hair dresser tries to lift out.

Under these circomestances, the only hair dressers who would proceed with this proscess are either the most knowledgable, experienced, and talented, OR the most irresponsible, irresponsible meaning reckless disregard for the risks should the hair break off and be discolored.

So, I decided to do my own hair, instead of go on a wild goose chase in search of the perfect stylist/color specialist.

One more note: I advise you to search, within inner cities, where most clientele is black or hispanic, for a hair-dresser who is good at coloring .

I only started bleaching my own hair after the hair salon I used closed down.

My stylist knew what to do with my hair because she bleached black hair blonde many times before she did mine.

On the other hand, the Salons in the expensive big malls, and rich neighborhoods have a clientele whose hair is easy to bleach. So, maybe, the reason alot of salons hesitated to do my hair is because of time and money.

It would not make scense for a salon to spend nearly 8 hours coloring 1 person's hair, when they can color 50 peoples' hair in the same amount of time, not to mention how much bleach, color, and conditioner  would be used on one person.
