A lonely man sits at home; long, gracious fingers teasing beautiful music out of a piano. The piano knows what no one else knows: his feelings which the piano lets loose every time he plays, yet failing to let anyone know about them; music without lyrics.
A lonely woman sits in a cafe, nursing a hot cup of coffee, as if she were looking deep into its soul and letting her feelings flow from her to the coffee; she could trust the coffee because it would never tell a single soul. The steam that came out of the cup was all it could say; not a single word.
Those two lonely souls were so stubborn you would think that one day they would just snap out of it and actually admit their feelings for each other. The piano and the coffee clearly couldn’t tell them, or push the other in the right direction. They had to get there themselves, and figure out a way to tell each other.
He has nothing to lose, except perhaps his dignity if he is rejected, not that he couldn’t cover that with a bit of sarcasm. She has nothing to lose, except perhaps her integrity if she is rejected, not that she couldn’t cover that with a bit of professionalism.
Neither had any real reason to not tell the other of their ever-growing feelings, except for the one thing that they shared greatly yet always at the wrong moments: their stubbornness. It pained everyone when neither would back down in argument about anything and they had no choice but to reach some sort of compromise to actually put an end to it. Eventually.
