So, it's generally acknowledged by the long hairs around here that Pantene shampoos and conditioners are awful for the hair. I have also had MANY stylists tell me this. And I've had terrible experiences with it myself.
So why is it that whenever I meet someone (in person) with stunning long hair, she tells me she uses Pantene? The other one is Mane and Tail.
It drives me crazy!

Pass. Maybe they lie, to wreck everyone else's hair when they try to copy them and have the nicest hair themselves.
Enfys, you may be right. This attitude would seem to be consistent with the Milwaukee-based club goers that Cornczech described in another thread. Fortunately we here are truly helpful.
For what it's worth, I hated Pantene. At first I liked it (the silicone). But after a few months my hair was dry, brittle and breaking off. Nasty.
i hated pantene , my hair didn't agree with the silicones and it became heavy and oily after only a short time (less than 24 hours , on about the 3rd use) I only used it about 4 times total :p enfys, wow , i've never heard anyone else have such a bad time with fructis , i personally really like it! I used it for quite awhile and it made my hair much nicer than it was before ! Its strange how different people have such different experiences :p

Very true QueenKatie. My wife loved Fructis at first (we got a free sample with our newspaper and she liked it so much she bought a bottle). But after several shampoos it started builidng up and created nasty knots in her knee-length hair. I would get one knot out and a bigger one would appear a couple of inches away. She switched to Mega Moisture shampoo and it slowly returned to good health. We gave the Fructis away.
I'm glad you have good results with it but, as you said, everyone is different.
I can't remember whether or not I've used Pantene before, but I do remember that I tried to stay away from it if possible. Altho the reason probably has a lot to do with the fact that when I was in high school, there was a rumor going around that Pantene would make your hair fall out, so I've consistently avoided it.

I tried Pantene and it didn't do a thing for my hair...only made it feel more coarse and straw like in spite the bottle said moisturizing. I prefer using other products besides Pantene. Fructis is nice but not a miracle worker.
Does anyone know which products are good, natural (much as possible with no weird chemicals involved) and not animal tested? I'm all ears for good ones esp. for caring and growing long hair.
Herbal Essences shampoo has some harsh detergent chemicals that can dry out your hair with overuse. I would stay away from it unless you have very oily hair. I know the scent is tempting!
I can't afford the fancy ones some of you get. Redken conditioner costs £12 a bottle!
Looks like I'll have to wait a while until I'm working full time and have left Uni (that'll be 7 1/2 years then )
I use Trevor Sorbie's products for long, straight hair. I only bought the regular shampoo and conditioner last week in Boots ( 3 for 2 offer - yay ), but have used the intensive conditioner since August. I like it, but even that is expensive for me £5 for 300ml. It is really good, and when I've read what he's said about long hair it is clear that he genuinely loves long hair - he said most of the recomendations I've seen on here. It's nice that some celebrity hairstylists think of hair as being important to the individual wearing it, and not just a way to make more money by making it hard to maintain without regular re-appointments. Wish their were more of his kind .
I recommend the VIVE line as a great inexpensive brand that you can get at drugstores and supermarkets. I like Color Vive and Nutri Vive and keep them around all the time.
I don't like to overuse my salon brands, switching around seems to work best for me.
I also use Baby Magic baby shampoo about once a week. It's a nice, low-cost, gentle shampoo.
Just about anything without sodium lauryl or ammonium lauryl sulfates is decent. Those are harsh detergents. Sodium LaurETH sulfate is fine.
Thanks Ill see if i can find those products...ive used herbal essences for years now though and they havent seemed to make my hair dry or anything...but then again maybe i just dont know any better. I know worse however (i.e. pantene).

Hi Erinlynn, I use Herbal Essences once in a blue moon (maybe once every year?) when I get a sample-sized S&C delivered with my newspaper. It seems to work very well as a clarifying shampoo.

EWWW don't use horse shampoo because it builds up on your hair. Pantene isn't good for you hair because it coats it with wax so it appears healthy. I don't suggest drug store shampoos and conditioners (and deep conditioners and leave in conditioners and styling products) Salon products work much better for me. I get all my hair products from ccb-paris.com. I've found that they are more gentle on your hair and leaves healthier and shinier. Plus, they smell a lot better too
I love you~!!!!!!!!

I like and use Pantene, Herbal Essences, and Garnier Fructis. I think the reason they work for me is because I'm always switching. But I also use other products, like Redken All Soft. Or maybe it's my hair type? I have very thick hair. Who knows? It's a shame that so many people hate Pantene because it smells SO good.
Hi, everyone! I was just over here looking for some help and noticed this thread. I have used Pantene since it came out on the market and I have never had a problem with it!! In fact, when I go to the salon and they tell me how beautiful and healthy my hair is and are just foaming at the mouth to know what I use.....when I say Pantene, they all turn white!!!! LOL I think it's funny as all get out!!!!
Anyways, I just wanted to say that I guess it depends on the person and their hair because my hair loves Pantene and it hates Redken and Sauve.......see, I went from one extent to the other on the shampoos (expensive, cheap). I always find myself going back to Pantene, so I guess I will just stay with them.
Good luck!!
Val

Hi Val! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Pantene. You prove that there are people who love it. When it comes to haircare products, I believe in using whatever works.

Hi, Dave! That's what my hair dresser told me after I told him that I didn't like the Redken that he wanted me to try. I hope you have a great day! :)

I used to use pantene smooth and sleek range, it made my hair feel like and look like plastic!! it made it really boofy too -_- I use Herbal essence triple blends now, I tried the normal herbal essences range but that made my hair so dry and itchy it drove me crazy, but the triple blend shampoo is great and smells lovely. I wash my hair with cold water now instead of in a steaming hot shower and its calmed down the frizz and is generally shinier
