damaged short hair

so i've been doing the same style where i gel the front of my hair for about a year now. However, randomly one spike is really wavy. My hair is only about an inch and a half it's never been wavy at this length. It gets wavy after about 3 inches. So not sure if it's damaged or if my hair if its getting more wavy. But i'm 18 so it seems weird for it to change now. Btw i'm a guy and i got my haircut 3 weeks ago if that changes anything. Thanks =)

Oh yeah my hair gets wavy at a certain length, the only thing is my hair just got cut shorter than usual and some of it's already curly. It's only like one part though, the rest of the hair is just as straight as it's always been. It's only like 1 inch and a half, my hair only gets wavy at like 3 inches or more. I've been doing this style for a year with the same type of haircut, so it don't see why now it'd get wavy. Does anyone know if it could be caused by stress or something? I just moved from socal to norcal if that makes a difference.
