Whether you are a guest, a bridesmaid, special mother, or the bride herself, hairstylists agree that you should dye your hair one week before the wedding. Beauty pros also recommend that you don't do anything drastic or dramatic right before a wedding, for obvious reasons.

As The Wedding Approaches

As the wedding approaches, all members of the bridal party and immediate family of the bride and groom will want to ensure they look their best.

For anyone who dyes their hair – or wants to dye their hair – special steps and coloring precautions should be taken so that the hair looks great for the wedding day.

Coloring one’s hair can have a variety of desirable and undesirable effects, so it is important to visit a hairstylist you know and trust. Feel free to ask questions and share your concerns – your stylist is there to help you.

If you plan to color your hair leading up to the wedding, no matter if you are the bride, bridesmaid, or mother of the bride or mother of the groom, consider the following tips before getting your hair dyed pre-wedding.

How Soon Before the Wedding Should I Dye My Hair?
Experts in the hair industry agree – if you plan to dye your hair before an important wedding – be it your own, your son’s or daughter’s, friend’s, or family member’s wedding – make sure you set your appointment for one week prior to the wedding.

“If anyone in the wedding party colors their hair, I always recommend that they to it one week before the big day, so that the color looks fresh and if there was any staining around the hair line, it will be gone in time,” says Maria Schmiedicke, stylist, president and owner of Salon deZEN in Alexandria, Virginia. “One week also gives you the freedom to change or correct your color in any way.”

“Also, I recommend anyone who colors their hair to color their hair at least one week before the wedding. Any longer and you may begin to see regrowth,” says Lia Dominguez, Stylist at Tom Brophy Salon in Beverly Hills. “Additionally, fresh colored hair gives the hair more volume which can make the hair easier to style and hold.”

“However, many brides tend to have conditioning treatments beforehand and this may tend to make the hair too soft and any style may not hold,” Dominguez adds. “Conditioning treatments should be performed one to two weeks before the wedding to avoid making the hair flat.”

Should I Try a New Hair Color Before the Wedding?

Hair care experts caution on trying a dramatic hair color change before a big event like your own wedding or your child’s wedding. Consider the following advice to help you decide on whether you should color your hair before the wedding.

“If you color your hair, try not to do anything different; the last thing you want is a color disaster before the big day,” says Lia Dominguez.

“Don’t make any big color or style changes before the wedding,” Schmiedicke likewise cautions. “You want to feel like yourself on that day.

Also, all the guests will know your old hair style and so with a big style change you would draw attention to yourself that should be directed to the bride.”
