Nail polish continues to move past being merely a cosmetic decoration and into the realm of an artistic movement, this time with a host of unexpected textures and finishes.

The next texture trends transcend wild colors, cool names and even chic designers adding their own labels to the bottles.  The next texture trend is pushing the envelope to the artistic side of the table.

OPI fueled the craze with their Shatter Topcoats after first breaking open the market with the Matte trend.

Shatter is applied like a regular topcoat it dries in such a manner as to split and crackle for a gritty, ripped, urban effect.  It is selling like hotcakes and is a huge OPI hit.

Some popular options include: Black Shatter by OPI, Lightning Bolt, Broken Hearted, and Cracked Concrete, all by China Glaze.

Jason Wu pushed the envelope even harder with his new Tweed collection created for CND.  It already has a waiting list.  The special effects top coat contain actual silk fragments giving nails a fabric-like finish resembling real tweet or silk.  Expected to be a huge seller.

CND options include Brigitte, Veronica, Sophia, and Miss Wu, along with Anna topcoat all from CND.

If you don't like cracked or tweed polish Orly has their Plastix collection which looks like rubber.  The polishes of Orly's Plastix collection dry to a pleather-like finish, making nails look as though they've been coated in rubber. Options include Retro Red, Viridian Vinyl, Old School Orange, and Purple Pleather which are all by Orly.

Matte
Matte nail polish is what many people started the trend of alternative finishes and textures. Chalkboard flat, it is the antithesis of the typical glossy nail.  Options include Mitzi, Lolly, and Phoebe, by Zoya. Matte Smoke by Diamond Cosmetics.

Indie Brand ManGlaze has a selection of silver glitter matter called Hot Mess that looks like a cross between velvet and glitter.

What's next in the world of alternative nail polish?  Have you tried any of these?  What do you love/hate about the new trends?
