Date Posted: January 07 2002 at 10:27am Carrageenan, a thickening ingredient in ice creams & soy milks, has been proven in scientific studies to increase cancer risk in animals based on a University of Iowa stucy done in Iowa City. Experts are advising that if there is a family history or cancer or a previous problem with cancer that you consider alternative thickeners such as guar gum and Xanthan. Other suggestions include cranking up vitamins to counter the impact of the chemical. Anyone else hear about this? Or have comments? The part that is scary is how they are encouring menopausal women to go with soy for their hormones and if thie substance is used in soy than that could have some consequences. Cranking up the vitamins seems like a good preventive plan. -------------
