what exactly is a carrying oil and what makes it different than other oils?

i think you mean carrier oils. I don't know too much. sometimes i mix my wild groth hair oil with a little vitamin e and sweet almond oil.

Carrier oils are also known as base oils or vegetable oils (despite the fact that some aren't really vegetable-derived) like jojoba, coconut, sunflower, grapeseed, corn... etc.. most of them have little or no scent.
They are used as a sort of "solvent", mixed with scented oils that are too strong/too expensive/too irritating to use by themselves.
