Katie showed up this morning with a fairly blunt bob cut right at her chin and possibility the blondest color ever.

It might be just a tad longer than chin length but it's much shorter.  Katie's hair was getting a little longer, past her shoulders again.  When the show opened, she welcomed Matt back and he commented that she got a haircut.  Her reply was that her Mom told her she needed one and that she still almost always does what her Mom tells her too.

Wow Hal, I thought I'd be first-but you beat me to it!

She did cut her hair. Matt asked her about it & she said that her mom told her to. It is right around the chin, blunt, and slightly blonder in the front. It isn't bad. But, I'm still one of those who likes the almost shoulder length with the flip at the bottom. It really fits her personality best, IMO.

If you are a talking head, I guess the hair should be an important component.

Katie's mom is a saint!

My two cents.

I really like Katie with longer hair and I'm usually not a fan of her haircuts. That being said, I like the color and, if she stays away from the ear tucks, maybe it will grow on me as it grows on her. Just minutes ago, they aired an interview Katie did with Amber Tamblyn and Blake Lively, a particularly fetching young woman with waistlength blonde hair. Both star in "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants." The interview was done the other day before Katie got her haircut and aired today. The contrast on the same show confirmed that I still like Katie better with longer hair.

I agree Aggie, thats how like her hair as well..plus bangs rather the that swoop thing she keeps next to her cheek.  Seems her mother is a big force in the hair styles.  I heard her make a simular comment the after she cut it shorter from her all time longest.

I must say that the side look does make it look shorter than I initially thought.  I don't really care for it too much.  I think it's the shortest her hair has been in a couple of years...don't you think?  You think she had about 3 inches trimmed?  That's a lot when it's that length.

I think I recall one other time after she grew her hair longish that she cut it right around this short or perhaps a tad shorter.

I was curious to see if she and Ann talked about her haircut.  Ann still seems to be growing her hair out and I've heard no mention of her hair getting long at all on the show ever.

Katie's mom - tell Katie to get some bangs!

Posted By: Curlyfan
Date Posted: May 31 2005 at 8:08pm
Blah. I'm glad she changed it, but once again disappointed by the change.
Katie seems for having a knack for choosing the blandest styles (IMHO) in
the style book, in defiance of current trends and (again IMHO) what would
look best on her. In this case, it seems she cut off the bottom flips, the one
part of her old style that gave her hair some personality and movement, and
kept the boring straight bob part. There's something almost matronly about
it now.

I'm still hoping someday she'll embrace the current trend and choose some
bangs and flips. My only hope for this cut is that it might reduce the odds of
the ear tuck. Slightly.

"Homely?" Katie is a lot of things, but she's not "homely to look at." She's shorter than most. She's perkier than most. She's got a smile that most would die for. She's got great legs. She raises money for charity. Some say she can be a b%$@! behind the scenes. But she's certainly not homely. I guess that statement says a lot about your taste or your age or both. Networks don't make a habit of paying millions to homely people. As I've said many times, Katie Couric has had the hair transformation of the 21st Century. (Although I liked that transformation much better before the current bob.)

I can no longer access my favorite Katie hair photo (link provided by Jerky Flea a year or so ago), but here are some of my favorite Katie looks:

Hey Gord... you left out close minded and ultra liberal... and though I would not call her homely you must admit she is not nearly as pretty as most in her position.

Posted By: JerkyFlea
Date Posted: June 01 2005 at 8:56am

For KramerGord and others...

http://www.cameroncole.com/cgi-bin/imageFolio.cgi?direct=News_Babes/Other/Katie_Couric&img=160 - http://www.cameroncole.com/cgi-bin/imageFolio.cgi?direct=New s_Babes/Other/Katie_Couric&img=160

And check out all the others.  Pretty much every pic has a style and/or color better than what she has now.  It's too blonde, too blunt, and too blangless...er, bangless.  The color washes her out, the length does nothing for her and makes her face look rounder, and the lack of bangs only contributes to the effect.

Add some lowlights to give it some depth, some bangs to frame her face, some layers for some movement.  Heck, anything other than this bland bob.  And Katie is cute...or at least can be with a better hairstyle than this.

Poke through those other pictures on the link above (click the house icon to go to the top) and you'll see what I mean.

P.S.  Anyone noticing how good Hannah Storm's hair on The Early Show looks of late?

Hal,

Close minded maybe, but ultra-liberal? Puhlease!

Speaking as an ultra-liberal, I can tell you she is not. I would argue more of a somehwat ignorant moderate.

She has let Newt Gingrich slide on numerous falsities on her show before.

And she looked best with the crop of her early days.

God bless you, Flea, for steering me to that link. I'm a jumper when it comes to the Katie bandwagon. When she has longer hair, I'm a regular viewer of the Today Show. When she gets it cut short, like she did Tuesday, I'm definitely off the bandwagon. I still watch the show, hoping Ann Curry still hasn't had her gorgeous hair cut or I tune into Robin Meade on CNN Headline News. Robin truly has the best hair on morning TV, although she's gone through a 3- to 5-inch trim in recent weeks. I'm with you on Hannah Storm. Saw her this morning while channel surfing. She looked great -- and she was interviewing Anne Bremner, a lawyer/Michael Jackson court junky, who, disappointingly, seems to have gotten a half-foot or so of her own blonde hair cut. Back to Katie: With all the high-stakes competition between her show and ABC's Good Morning America, I'm a bit surprised she went with that drastic of a change, both in color and hair length. I like status quo when it comes to Katie -- and status quo Katie blows away softball Diane Sawyer any day.

I saw Katie's hair change. . . not being a bob fan, I think it's dull, but better than long. . . and not as good as short, of course. . .  I'd like to see her with a short, flippy style, or some texture. . . and less blonde. . . not super-dark, as that's not very good on her, but a light or medium brown might do, maybe some gold or honey highlights. . .  Almost makes me wish I had her mom's ear, since she seems to take maternal suggestions so seriously ^_^ .

She needed a change, but not this change. She should go with maybe an updated version of the look she had years ago. Something a bit shorter than she now has with bangs and a whole lot less blonde!!! Maybe use a little styling product to give it some life. As far as her being homely..... I'll grant you that she's not the perky, impish little pixie that she was 15 years ago, but she's still a nice looking woman. She just needs to find the right style and color.

I love Katie but I agree that she should add bangs.  It softens her look and brings out her eyes IMHO.

I had hoped that at least with this new cut Katie would stop tucking it behind
her ear and show off her new style to its full effect. Then I watched the
beginning of Friday's show, and it took her exactly four seconds on camera
to execute the Ear Tuck, thus ruining that sleek "curtain" look I assume she's
going for.

This confuses me. Why choose a style that gets in your way so much you
have to constantly banish it behind your ear, especially when there are so
many other great cuts with layers, bangs, flips, etc. that look tailor-made for
her and wouldn't require that, and would also flatter her and be in style?

Harumph.

I think I know how Katie can help return the Today Show to solid ratings. Grow her hair longer and part it on the other side.

The evidence:

June 2004. Today Show is the show that's "the most watched morning show... ever." Katie looks like this:

http://editorial.gettyimages.com/source/search/details_pop.aspx?iid=50996819&cdi=0 - http://editorial.gettyimages.com/source/search/details_pop.a spx?iid=50996819&cdi=0

June 2005. Today Show is locked in the fight of its rating life with Good Morning America. Katie's hair is bobbed and the part is on the opposite side:

http://www.gogomag.com/cgi-bin/tvheads_viewer.pl?tvheads32121&32121&Katie - http://www.gogomag.com/cgi-bin/tvheads_viewer.pl?tvheads3212 1&32121&Katie

They don't need a new morning hostess. They just need the old one back.

Once and for all, this isn't a news commentary site; it's a hair commentary site. As a journalist, I choose to get the majority of my news from newspapers -- the most comprehensive source of news available -- or the Intenet. I get traffic reports and sports talk from radio. I get comedy and drama from TV. Why tune into to the 6 p.m. TV news to hear "Stay tuned at 11 for news on (fill in topic here)?" Teasers bite. Why should I watch a talking head say "As we broke the news on this yesterday...?" Why should I care about a show when a reporter inserts himself or herself into the story? And, you know, of course, that TV news -- at least local TV news -- gets many of its leads from the newspaper? That's not to say there's nothing of value on local and national news, but there's only so much negative news I can take. Newspapers allow me to read the news when I like it and put it aside when I'm done with it. With all the commentary and babble on the Fox News Network, I can hardly take it. CNN seems to show most of the same news reports over and over again. The Today Show and others have interesting stories, but, really, would we be watching if we didn't like the people who serve as host or hostess? And just because I comment on someone's hair doesn't mean I don't listen to what she says. Sometimes I do. Just because I love Joss Stone's hair doesn't mean I don't listen to her music. Just because I love Jane Seymour's hair doesn't mean I don't pay attention to the plots of her movies. The same applies to TV news and news shows. So please don't go there any more, OK?

Kramer/Gord you are the poster most likely to equate ratings, record sales, popularity and or viewership to hair length and style. Thus giving the perception that's why people (you) watch one show or another.

Well, Hal, using me as an example, I'm more likely to watch the Today Show when Katie and Ann (or Natalie) are having good hair days; less likely to watch when they aren't. Watching Robin Meade on CNN or Juliet Huddy on Fox can totally make my morning. Same with Elizabeth Vargas on ABC at night. Yes, this will probably sound shallow or silly, but to me, beauty and great hair = ratings, popularity and viewership. Tell me if you are you more likely to watch a news babe that's pretty and has good hair? Just for fun, which of these do you like best?

If I watch "Today" it's because they have some interesting person to interview, something cooking that looks good, some demonstration I wanna see, etc.  *shrugs*  There are a lot of places to get news.  I'm more likely to just watch the local newscast while I exercise than seek out any specific news shows based on anchor.  It doesn't really matter to me who's delivering the news, so long as they tell stories I care about in a reliable way.  I mostly read news online, though, and it's more often the health and science, 'cause that interests me, or the odd news for a laugh, than anything else.

I noticed that hairstyle this morning too.  It was really strange although I must admit that at some level I did kind of like it.  I think the style would've worked better if her hair had been longer.  It really looked a little stranger than this pictures shows.  The front was pulled just straight back.

Hannah Storm's hair looked a tad shorter this morning. I know I get crap for this view, but the longer Hannah's hair gets, the better she looks. No one ever talked about her on this board when her hair was shorter. There's tons of before shots out there, like these...

Bleccch. I've never liked that style (pulled back over the top) on anyone,
especially on Katie. It always looks to me like a skunk stripe, and Katie's
too-bland (oops, I mean too-blonde) hair only accentuates that.

Katie, I beseech thee, just a few bangs and a little flip, please....?

Yesterday, Katie's hair looked longer and fuller than it had in a couple months and I was going to report that. I even liked the slight blonde streaks in the front. Today, Katie's hair is several inches shorter and she's gone back to the totally platinum blonde look. Ugh. Back to bed for me.

Ugh is right. One more shade lighter and she'll disappear altogether...

The current look is not a great one for her. She seems to let her hair grow for a few months and then cut off a couple of inches. In the article about morning anchors in the latest issue of the New Yorker Katie says she is almost completely gray and decided to grow out and lighten her hair so she wouldn't have to go to the hairdresser as often.

Since Katie has the week off from The Today Show, I'm sure she has plenty of time to surf the net and has probably visited this site several times. Katie, sweetie, if you care about how your No. 1 fan in Michigan feels about you, you'll grow your hair out again to this length:

Carry on.

Kramer, first off I agree with you, and that link you provided to the pic is my all time fav look for Katie. I actually find her attractive there.

I also agree with with your Kuroneko observation. That is a great new pic K!

Katie had some style today for the Hometown Wedding:

I really don't know what else she could have done with that haircut.

That's for sure. I guess we'll never see it long again.

I liked her look this morning too...pretty cute considering it's not back to her pixie cut yet.

However, right when they came on the air this morning, Katie made a comment to Matt that she had "embraced a bad hair day".

So...apparently she did not like it...maybe after a few more days like that and a few more phone calls from her mom and she'll go back to her super short style from yesteryear...and perhaps talk Ann into going with her...November sweeps are coming!

My two cents.

Please tell Katie to keep some bangs!

Is it my imagination, or did Katie have a subtle wedge cut this morning?
Hard to tell since that particular cut really only reveals itself in the back -
which is just one of the many reasons it's not a good idea for Katie, who,
like most TV people, usually faces the camera...

So she has practically no hair length in the back now?

Prediction: When Ann Curry gets her LOL cut, Katie will join her for a haircut (to make Ann feel less) and have her hair lopped off into a short crop. She is making the gradual transition back to an ultra short cut.

I was watching Katie on Friday and while I like the shorter look, it drives me crazy to watch her always trying to put her hair behind her ears.

Your absolutely right. It's terribly obvious that she can't deal with the length at the sides. It seems that she's now weened herself off the ear tuck by graduating the back shorter but she's still having problems making this look like a real style instead of the lack of a decision.
Even with this new mid-neck length bob her hair is looking bad of late. Katie could have a nice fresh A line bob shape if she just made up her mind. It seems to this stylist anyway that this would work so well with her features better than this thinned out mess she's wearing now. Now if she could just lay off the thinning shears...
The way she has razored out the sides so transparently I can't but thinking her stylist is doing her a diservice not due to cut it off to lip length and start over with something more blunt.

None of it is hers, Mike. She was wearing a Marilyn Monroe wig. I concur with you about Ann: she looked great with or without her costumed hair.
