Recently I have been thinking of purchasing a full lacewig, you have to check out HB lacewig forum, it is just incredible!! Check out the install pics, you're gonna blown away by how invisible most of these units are!
Anyway, I am thinking of using some of my Bohyme hair but I will have a little issue if I want to use it for a lacewig. The colors I use are great for extensions (blending with my own hair) but it will be a little too golden if I need to apply this hair on my scalp.
Soooo.... I need to tone it and reduce the red color just a little bit. I have read in an old post that Shades EQ Equalizing Conditioning Color Gloss was used by a lot of girls here to tone Bohyme hair.
Here is the product:

http://www.extendedlengths.com/sheqeqcocogl.html

Now, because I am totally ignorant when it comes to coloring/toning and all that stuff, I want to ask you a maybe silly question: do you just need to buy this product on the link above, or do you need to buy some sort of developper or something to mix this stuff with?
Can someone tell me how to use this product to tone down red?
The Shade EQ Platinum Ice is the one used to get rid of red I think, and I am thinking of maybe using the Shade EQ Vanilla Creme on my virgin russian to add some gold to this hair.
Thanks a lot for your help! Wink

Hello,

Shades EQ is an excellent toning product.  You do need to mix it with a developer, they call that the 'processing solution'.  You mix the tint and the processing solution in equal parts.

Platinum Ice  has a puple base and it is meant to tone down excessive yellow, since on the color wheel purple is the opposite of yellow.

Platinum Ice won't do anything to neutralize 'red'.  To neutralize red, you would need to use a toner with a green base.

The Vanilla Creme produces a real nice golden blond color.

Both the Platinum Ice and Vanilla Creme are level 9 colors, so that means they are designed to be used on light blond hair, they won't do anything for darker colors.

Hope that helps!

Hello Frenchie1,
Metalgirl is totally right about what she said, you need green base to neutralize the red, I use shades EQ in my salon and is a great toner.
Good luck

Frenchie, why don't you try some of the purple shampoo used to take yellow out of gray hair? Clairol makes one called shimmer lights. Dilute with water for your test. You will need to see if the light blonde colors will grab too much purple.
You can always go to semi-permanent colors if it doesn't work. I like Wella Color Charm semi-permaent colors in the tube. You need to mix it with an activating lotion.  I like 10NA  10/01  Lightest ash blonde. I always dilute it with a little hot water, it mixes up better with the heat.

I have tried a pruple shampoo, it never worked for me, is there something special you need to do to it?

I have toned Bohyme before... lets  see...

I have since switched toners to Wella's "white lady" which I prefer.
JUST WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T TRY TO BLEACH IT! (found out the hard way!)

Thanks everyone!
Metalgirl, thanks for letting me know about the green base color.
It's instructive, but at the same time I am confused now. I don't know if I want to reduce the red or the yellow...
Let me explain myself... when I wear some new Bohyme 16 or Bohyme 14B, it is always too yellow/orange for the first few days, after 10 days or so of wearing/blowdrying/styling the hair loses its strong yellow/orange tones and become ashier. Now it is still golden blonde, but ashier.
I would like to obtain this 'washed out', 'ashier' result with some new Bohyme, without wearing it.
Metalgirl, do you think platinum ice will help me get rid of the some gold in the hair?
Also, is there a green based color that you know?

Mokipono, I have though about purple shampoo, but I am not sure how to use it -how long you let it sit for ex.- or what kind to buy. Have you tried it yourself? How does it work?
I am thinking that the effect of a purple shampoo will wash away anyway. Do the results last?

Poose, thanks for the link. I have heard of Wella's white lady too. How do you use it?

Hi Frenchie,
I always start by diluting the purple shampoo with 30% water. I leave it on for about 5 min. and check it by rinsing it out completely. If it hasn't taken then I'll put it on the hair straight out of the bottle and check again in 5 min.
I use it all the time on Russian hair because I want to use the least amount of chemicals as possible.
I prefer Clariol shimmer lights, it has a nice smell to it. I buy it at the beauty supply store.
Do the results last?
Good question..........it will fade a bit in time, but just rewash it.

ITA! Toning shampoos are perfect for this and they aren't permanent (well, they can be!). You can play with the toning time and formula and not be too worried about damaging the hair.
Love clip-ins and tape!

I'm not a hairdresser but my personal experience tells me that the purple shampoo would be a good way to go.
BTW... your installs are always beautiful and flawless. THx for sharing so much of your knowledge.
