QuoteReplyTopic: fine hair with questions Posted: August 04 2004 at 8:57am
I am new to this site. I am 40 yrs old and have naturally wavy (not kinky) fine hair. Currently my hair is about one inch above my waist . I wash it only 2 times a week and will typically wear it up loosely (summer time) so the ends don't fly. I just had my hair straightend - and am now regretting it. My hair is splitting at the ends, but I have always had some sort of splitting. At night I will loosely baraid my hair without an elastic on the end. About once every 3 months I get my hair trimmed, just enough to even it out. My goal is to have about 8 to 10 more inches. I need help with my ends.
That's so inspiring to hear about a woman at 40 with long waist length hair! I'm a college student and growing mine out. I do a heavy oiling before each wash, concentrating on the ends. Also, I would go through my hair and "dust" all the split ends.. searching through each section and snipping off all the splits with hair scissors. There's a twisting method some people also use. Will someone come on here and help me describe it...? I don't know how to say...
Best of luck, Anais Satin

Yes, it sounds like your hair is really lovely, Lorraine. But maybe the straightening was to harsh for it. I really don´t know what straightening is, but I suppose it´s done with chemicals, like a perm.
AnaisSatin´s ideas are good, I´d go for oil and trimming as well. And patience. And stay away from the bad stuff in the future.
I never got the twisting method. I usually search for the splits in front of a white computer screen. It works for me. I hope you find a method that works and get your hair back into shape!

The "twisting" method for trimming split-ends involves taking a section of hair and twisting it until the strand ends "pop" out from the twisted section. For some people, this makes it easy to see which ends are split, and which are not. For sure, it probably makes it easier to trim the splits while avoiding any accidental trimming of other strands. I generally "fish" through the ends of my hair when loose, taking advantage of sunlight (or whatever lighting conditions work for you) to easily see the ends, and carefully position a pair of sharp scissors above the split of just the strand that is split.
