Hey all!!

So it's great that my hair in growing but it's really 'heavy' and 'thick' at the ends.. and I kinda prefer that it's a bit thinner in the ends.. so do you think I should get Layers?? I had layers in the past and it was getting tough to manage them.. So i made it all same length.. I also don't blowfry my hair. But i was thinking of getting really really LONG layers... any thoughts??

I'm a firm believer that not everyone can pull off the "long all one length" look. I think that the dimension and look that layers give long hair is lovely. I say go for it- If you don't like it, long layers don't take much time to grow out at all. :)

sunset,

It depends on whether or not you presently have the length you want. If you're going longer, I'd advise waiting until you get there, and then re-assess. Chances are your hair will be naturally thinner at the ends by then.

Dave/Snuggles thanks for your response.. I think i'm going to wait until my hair grows few more inches and then re-evalute to see if I should get layers. I have a feeling that my hair is going to get thinner as it gets longer at the edges.. which I'll be ok with but for now I'm just going to keep it in a ponytail 'til it gets longer 'cause it doesn't look very professional at work with hair that thick and heavy at ends.. any suggestions dave? :)

Sounds like a good plan, sunset. Can you braid your ponytail? (It's what I do for work). French braids and buns are additional professional-looking possibilities.

I guess I can try to braid but where I work people may look at me like I am weird if I braided my hair.. most of the people have short hair and those who have long hair usually have it in a bun or a nice looking ponytail.. but I dont 'know how to do a bun besides the fact that it won't stay since I have layers on the sides (in front). But i have to figure out a way or just put it up in a ponytail :)

Hi Sunset,

Sounds like ponytails and buns will both avoid comments.

If you want to try a braid, why not? (why do you care if they think it's unusual?) Seems strange that your co-workers with long hair would think it's okay to wear ponytails or buns, but not braids.

Anyway, making a bun looks easy; I've watched several of my lady friends make them. After combing out your hair, bend over (flip your head over, not too wildly). Smooth the "outside" of the hair, and make a fist (holding the hair) at the crown of your head. Then, use both hands to twist the hair in one direction. Move your hands down the length of the ponytail, and keep twisting until it starts to coil. Allow the coil to wrap around itself at the base of the ponytail (by your head). Keep twisting and wrapping the hair around the ponytail, and tuck the ends under. You can secure it with hairsticks, pins, or a scrunchie.

If you want the bun at the nape of your neck, skip the "flip your head forward" part, but otherwise follow the rest of the process.

Did that make sense?

You might want to ask one of the women at work (who wears her hair in a bun) how she does it, if/when it seems like an appropriate time to do so.

HTH
