I used to be happy with my hair, but now it does not feel like mine anymore. I have had hair down to my tights for years, but I had problems with my skin this summer, and I suppose that affected the condition of my hair too. Now it is a bit above my waist, I had to get the dry ends off. It should not be too drastic a change. Still, I've started to feel that I liked my hair better even in the frizzy state that it had been for last couple of months. Now it looks like it is made of acrylic, it is like a wig. Also, if I lift it from my back to fall upon my chest, it forms a sharp V in the middle. Is it really supposed to be like this? It would not matter that much, because I prefer to wear my hair up or on a braid anyway, but I cannot dress it up anymore, because I do not know how. I used to know many tricks how to style my hair, and liked to get creative with it, but nothing I know works now. And I hate the way braiding my hair makes it look even shorter, but unfortunately that is the only option I have got left. That basically means that I am always uncomfortable and self-conscious these days.
I suppose that my hair will be on the good old length in couple of years and I can't wait. I really need another option for the braid, because I believe that if I can tuck the ends of my hair away, thay are safe from all harm, dryness and brittleness. I need my hair to stay healthy. Still, can anyone tell what happens if I cut the "V" straight?

If you remove the "v" from the front. You will have an inverted "V" in the back. It is cut straight across in the back, so when you pull it to the front on both sides, the portion in the middle is the farthest away and thus, the shortest.

Relatively speaking, your hair is still extremely long...enjoy it at it's current place and all of the plces along the way too!

Hello Tiuku,

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you've been having with your skin and hair.

When you say that your hair looks like it is made of acrylic (or a wig), do you mean that it is still dry, or brittle? Or excessively shiny? What do you think your hair needs? Moisture and protein from a deep conditioning? Or does it need clarifying to get rid of buildup which is causing it to look like "acrylic?"

Jacqui is correct about the appearance of a v-shape in front. Hair trimmed straight across in back, then brought forward, will give the illusion of a v-shape. Hypothetically speaking, if you cut the "v-shape in front" straight across (in front), you will have a v-shape in back -- and your hair will be even shorter. I don't think that's what you want.

Time will remedy the situation. Just let it grow without cuts or trims for awhile. Hang in there and let us know how things progress for you.

Thank you, Jacqui and Dave for explaining the shapes. I just do not understand why I have not seen this same shape elsewhere, I have many friends with long, blunt cut hair, and it looks different (and better) on them no matter wich way they are wearing their hair, so I had started to wonder if there is something wrong in the cut. When I was writing the start of this thread, I was trying to figure what exactly it is that I do not like in my hair now, and what I came up was a mental image of a cheap wig. It is too bulky and stiff and limp at the same time; it just hangs down my back.

When I run my hand through it, my hair feels exactly the same from the top to the ends of the strands, so I suppose it is in the optimum condition.
The stylist really took away all the dry ends and probably a bit extra.

Tiuku, it sounds as if your "stylist" took liberties with your hair. If your hair did not form a "V" before the cut, it was snipped in by the cutter. Sorry you are disappointed.
It may not be true in your case, but "frizziness" is often exagerated by one over-analyzing one's hair. At least it's still long, Tiuku, and you now appreciate what you had. It'll be back soon, and if you think you made a mistake, you need not repeat it. Stay away from hairdressers if you love really long hair, and when you *must* trim, get someone you can trust, and bring a friend to verify that your wishes are heeded, just in case. Bob

Tiuku,

IMO the preferred way to shape hair (such as you have described) is blunt and straight across, but not all brought to the back. The sides remain in front, and they are carefully blended into the back section. This shaping trim is best done when your hair is center parted, even if you never wear a center part. This way, no matter how your hair is parted, or how it falls about you, it'll truly look like it is all one-length, without the v-shape.

Something to consider at your next trim, perhaps?

Sorry about your ordeal, Tiuku. Bob has a point, I think. I experienced my hair quite differently after a good 4-5 inch cut, suddenly being very conscious about the way it fell. There was really nothing wrong with it, I just looked at it more closely, and in my grief over the lost inches (sounds ridiculous I know, it´s only hair, but you all know what I mean - and I hadn´t cut it for three years) I projected my feelings on the hair I had left.

I´m sure you will be happy about it again.

The more you complain, the longer God lets you live.
