My partner cuts my hair about every three weeks (nothing hard as it is just a buzz cut), but she suggested that I should trim hers to save her trips to the salon every month.

Is this a good idea??? and if so how much should I be taking off??

I have been cutting the hair of female friends and my wife for years. You didn`t say how long her hair was or your preference. To start with trimming her hair you`ll need a few things to do it right. 1st is sharp scissors, a wide tooth comb, some hair clips, a cape, a spritzer bottle, plenty of time and a good set of ears. The last is important to give her the style she wants. Comb her hair before youu start to see how it lays and use the spritzer to dampen, not soak her hair. Take your time the first time you take scissors to her hair and start by only taking off a small amount. Pin it up and let it down in sections as you trim it.You can always cut off more, but you cannot uncut it once it is in her lap from an "Ooops".
When you trim bangs leave them a little longer when they are wet as they will shrink up when they are dry. I use the eyebrows as my guide as to length. If her hair is quite long you may need to have her stand up while you trim it. One friend of mine had extremely thich hair that reaches past her tush. I parted it in the center and combed it all forward, sectioned it and trimmed it even across the front to give it the rounded look across the back. One added point, if you are unsure, pick up one of the how to videos or books and review them first. I know my partner and I enjoy the quiet time and the chats we have when I giver her her monthly trim.

We also cut each other`s hair. For us it becomes a special bond. Some good advice above - a lot depends on your partner`s style.

If the layers aren`t in bad shape, don`t touch them. If there are some frizzies, take off about an 1/8 inch from the very tips. The ones in the front I would hold up above her head to make sure that they are even on both sides. Hold them up away from her head and use the comb as a guide to trim it. Growing out is tough and takes a long time, be patient.
