Did anyone else see Thursday's Oprah? Where they had all these ladies who won some Matrix Rapunzel contest... Then they CHOPPED OFF THEIR HAIR to shoulder length!!!! My DH taped it for me - he thought I would be excited because it was about long hair. I was traumatized to say the least! Granted they were giving the hair to Locks of Love (which I have heard conflicting stories about anyways). But still! I got very militant with him - anyone comes near me with a pair of snips to do this is going shouldn't be surprised when I beat the crap outta them. He didn't know that I'd be so upset. WELL DUH! They had a team of Matrix designers work on their "makeovers". I thought that only one of the ladies looked okay with short hair. Plus, all the new do's looked rather high maintenance to me. (One of the girls did cry right after the big chop) I wonder if getting the big chop was a condition of their winning the contest? Off to the Matrix website to investigate....
Okay I guess this show was a repeat (never see it much anyways)... But I am still upset! From what I found, it looks like you couldn't win unless you agreed to donate. PHOOEY ON THEM!

Unfortunately, impressionable people are easily influenced to cut their hair if it's for a "charity", or to get on TV. When the pressure's on, it's easy to get sucked in. ("Act now and get something for nothing!") When it's over and you're trying to get your hair to do something it wasn't intended to do, the thrill is gone.
Wouldn't that make an interesting documentary, following up on some of these women who received TV makeovers?
Everybody has their price. If someone were to pay me $50,000 per year of growth, I'd be willing to shave my head.
Just looking for a few good hair slaves - is that too much to ask?

Yeah! I think that would be a great idea! I know Allure does something similar - give women makeovers then checks back a month or so later to see how they are doing. Most of the time, the hair style and makeup they were originally given is way too complicated to do on a daily basis. Why they can't do a realistic makeover is beyond me. Take into consideration people's lifestyle etc... If someone says that they are low maintenance - give 'em a low maintenance makeover! The makeovers that really cheese me off are the ones where they take someone with gorgeous curly hair and straighten the heck out of it! (especially when they cut it so it only looks good straight!) Grrrrrrr...
toodles!

I haven't seen the show but have heard about it. I understand how you feel about the events shown. I'm certain that the "victims" on the show all agreed to allow their hair to be cut.
Regarding the charitable organization you mentioned, they receive lots more hair than they use in hairpieces (and they don't turn away any qualified request). Basically they don't need any more hair, from anybody -- unless they have squandered their stockpile. So the show was merely a publicity stunt done for them and for the haircare product company you mentioned.
eKatherine, just a few thoughts on your comments... you have something that even the richest women in the world cannot buy. And a fair number of them have purchased hair (which grew on someone else' head) and had it attached to their own in an attempt to achieve a semi-reasonable facsimile of the real thing.
From time to time, some people have suggested I cut and sell. I tell them that I'm not interested in having a fire sale on my personal assets.

If my hair were cut, it would be of no value - it's colored, and the natural color is mixed with gray. But if someone were to give me a check that would allow me a comfortable retirement right now? Why not? We all have our price, and that's mine.
