I'm looking to get a haircut similar to Julian Casablancas, the guy from The Strokes. I don't like the band at all, but hey the guy has a nifty haircut. Anyways I have pretty short 1.5-2 inch hair right now, which I gel up the front. Pretty standard.

My problem is with growing out my hair. How do you do it? I've tried before and it kind of grows out in the front but then the back starts looking really puffy and pretty ugly. At which point I proceeded to cut it off. Is it just inevitable that you'll go through a period of ugly looking hair that is neither long nor short?

Yup, anyone growing out their hair will go through awkward periods. You just have to find creative ways to deal with it, and try to avoid cameras for a while so the awkward stages can't be photographed :-P . I had to destroy pictures before of just that type :-P .
