Is washing your hair on a daily basis (even with good shampoo and conditioner) really the healthiest thing for your hair and scalp? Or is letting the natural oils get to the hair better for it? I read in a magazine once that washing the scalp everyday is important to keep hair loss at a minimum. It sounded like it was similar to exfoliating the skin. But still, it seems kind of confusing to me. I've noticed that a lot of people (in interviews, etc.), who have waist lenght hair or longer, mention that they only wash their hair 3 or 4 times a week. I guess I wonder if that is because of the time factor, or is it what's healthiest for the hair? ( I know that everyone is different, but I was wondering if there are any general opinions about the subject.)

Hi Clare...I think the answer to this question is "it depends on your hair". I know that is a lame answer...but I have found over the years that it really depends on the condition, texture and oiliness or dryness of your hair and scalp. I personally wash my hair almost every day. There are some days that I can get buy with not washing my hair. The longest I can go is 2 days and then my hair gets limp and oily and looks like hell. I have a friend who has butt length hair and she only washes her hair 2x a week. This is because her hair is naturally on the dry side and looks really good for 3-4 days in a row. There are a million opinions (and no obvious correct ones) on whether to wash the hair daily or not. I think the common answer on this question is to consider the individual scalp & hair needs and go with that.I have read often that washing the scalp every day does help slow down hair loss because it does stimulate the scalp. However, there are a lot of theories that say this is not so. Once again...lots of opinions. It is hard to say who is right and who is wrong on these questions. This is like the debate of whether trimming your hair makes it grow faster. You can get a thousand different opinions on that one too.Karen:-)
