That's such a tough question. I don't smoke so I don't know from experience, but I have read that smoking is detrimental to hair growth. On the other hand I was at a wedding last weekend where there was a woman who had a really great waist length head of hair. Later at the reception I saw her chain smoking and drinking to excess. I have also seen the model Kristy Hume (who has a great blond mane) smoking in magazine pictures. My own personal opinion is that there are some people who have great hair genes and no matter what they do they will have a great head of hair. I am missing this gene and have to work like a dog to get great hair.Probably a good route to take would be to look at your hair and see what condition it is in and then try some things to improve it. That could be your hair care products, diet or lifestyle (smoking).A thought: There is no conclusive proof that smoking is good for you, so if you need a reason to quit maybe this is a good one. You could try those patches or switch over to herbal cigarettes (Cancer Man from the X-Files smokes herbal cigarettes imported from England).I'm sure that you will find a solution that suits you.Good luck and happy growing!

I tried them for a while when I was trying to quit smoking and they were worse than tobbaco. Very harsh heavy smoke. :-P I'm asthmatic and the herbal cigarettes triggered asthma attacks more than regular smokes. As for smokings effects on your hair... well it's not the worst thing you can do, but it's probably not all that great for your hair either. People who have smoked all their lives have more wrinkles and age spots when they get older and I imagine the damage done to their skin extends to the scalp which creates your hair. You can have beautiful healthy hair and smoke, but you'll probably have healthier hair for longer if you don't. Not to mention smoking makes your hair smell like smoke.I smoked for a good 7 years and I'm very happy I was able to quit. It's very difficult though. Good luck. One suggestion that I have is to try American Spirits if you're trying to taper off, they're free of all additives and I found that they were more satisfying to smoke and reduced my compulsion to smoke more and more cigs.-jennifer
Cigarettes decrease blood circulation to the skin and extremities. Less blood flow means less oxygen and nutrience to the cells in your scalp and hair folicules. I would follow that your hair would not grow as fast because you smoke. If you are really invested in growing your hair out them you should consider at least cutting down. I hope this helps.-Johannah
