QuoteReplyTopic: Growing out unruly bangs Posted: January 12 2000 at 2:05am
I am starting to grow out my bangs, and they are totally out of control. My hair is naturally wavy, and when my bangs reach a certain length, they begin to curl in very unusual directions. They aren't long enough to pull back yet, or I'd try that. I've tried straightening them with a curling iron after a squirt of hairspray, but this does not last long. No matter what I put on them, they start sticking out all over the place in no time. I try to brush them back and spray them, and that doesn't work either. Do any of you have suggestions to help me keep my sanity while I grow out my bangs? I'm about ready to resort to the scissors again! Thanks in advance!Tiara

Thanks in advance! My hair is straight, but a few months ago I started having problems with my bangs. They decided they needed to have a part, but not in the same place as the rest of my hair. After intense negotiations, we came to a compromise - they would part themselves in the same place as the rest of my hair, and I would grow them out. Then began the frustration. My bangs would not stay back. My hair is very fine, so it escaped barrettes very quickly. Sometimes the barrettes would slide right out and land on my lab bench, perilously close to my experiments. My current solution is to wear a stretchy cloth headband around my head, tucking the bangs underneath. I can thank an anonymous clerk at my local Target store for this idea - I saw her wearing one and decided it was exactly what I needed.Good luck!Laura Jane lswanson@sunflower.bio.indiana.edu
Growing out bangs is really a patience tester! My bangs are now down to my upper lip and I have hair accessories to thank for that. When my bangs were still quite short I would only wear sleepers. I would part my bangs on the side and leave the side with less hair to hang on its own. The other side I would comb flat against my head and then fasten back with one or more sleepers. For unruly little stubborn bits of hair I would use sleepers that were made for little kids. Once in they do not fall out or slip. I also used hair bands. The cloth ones are very comfortable and hold hair back very well. My suggestion to you would be to go to your nearest Walmart (good selection and cheap) and pick up a bunch of hairbands, sleepers, clips and bobby pins and go home and create a few easy styles to keep your bangs away from your face. In no time your bangs will be grown out.Good luck and happy growing.

Let's resurrect this subject for a bit. My bangs are now to the tip of my nose, but because of nature's sense of humor, they curl up to "normal bang length", but not "normal bang style." In other words, they look like crap. I am not going for an "empty forehead" look, but am hoping to grow out to a longer bob with sideswept layers and a little shorter back section (so it will swing forward). When I pull them back, the 'empty forehead' I have (read, big)looks terrible..Help!
