QuoteReplyTopic: HOW OFTEN TO SHAMPOO Posted: January 12 2000 at 2:15am
I read on the mens Long Hair Hyperboard a post from one of the guys that for long hair to be kept in really good condition you should only use shampoo about once a week and just use warm water to wash away excess oil and dirt inbetween because long hair needs the natural oil and shampoo just washes it away and in turn dries it out. (sorry for the run-on sentence). I am wondering if anyone does this and if so how it works for them. I personally can't let my hair go that long without worrying about whether it will walk straight off my head and not come back. Anyone?Leslie

Hi,I personally can not go longer than 2 days without washing my hair. I think that everyone has to find their own way for their hair routines. That includes how often to shampoo. For me, my hair looks best when I wash every day and use a good rinse out conditioner with a good detangler.Best wishes,Karen> I read on the mens Long Hair Hyperboard a> post from one of the guys that for long hair to> be kept in really good condition you should only> use shampoo about once a week and just use warm> water to wash away excess oil and dirt inbetween> because long hair needs the natural oil and shampoo> just washes it away and in turn dries it out.> (sorry for the run-on sentence). Anyone?I don't know how you would classify your hair. Is it oily, normal or dry? My hair is normal to dry and I have always shampooed once a week. My hair length is almost to my waist and have found that for me one washing is enough. If I am sweating a lot from exercise or summer heat, I will throw in an extra wash, but this is definitely for the summer months.> Leslie
My hair was always fairly dry. I used to wash it every other day. It is less dry now, and I wash it every day. I don't skip a day more than about once a month, if that often. In summer, I wash it in the morning; in winter, I usually wash it in the evening, or it will freeze before I get to the lab.Having a healthy, clean scalp is very important for healthy hair. Washing every day means you can't cheat and use a shampoo just because it is cheap or convenient - you have to know what really works well for you. It's a lot of trouble to take, but many people consider it the best choice.Laura Jane lswanson@sunflower.bio.indiana.edu
