Hi...I'm new to this site...this is my first visit...I am soooo desperate for a decent head of hair I am about to shave my head and start over!! No kidding!! I am 21 and mother to a infant so I have neglected my hair for almost two years....ugh...I have fly aways and sun damage....color damage and probably brain damage for waiting so long to deal with it....now I just wash and hope for the best....please help me with some ideas on how to get my hair under control...it's about bra strap length and wavy, full, and thick...I am at my wits end....I have read about different products on this site but I wouldn't know where to begin...right now I use Neutrogena for color/permed/damaged hair....it seems ok but since I have moved into the country my hair has gone to straw...could it be my well water???? I have lived my whole life in town so I really noticed a diff. when I moved....... PLEASE HELP!!! --Thanks

Hi Patty,Being a 58 year old male I'm not sure what I might have to say will be of any value to you, but here is my input.I started growing my hair out about 8 months ago it's about 6 inches long now. I live in the country and my hair was really dry and fly away. After reading some of the postings on this site, I stared using Aveda products, washing my hair with water from my dehumidifier and with in a couple of weeks my hair was shinny and soft and very managable. One thing that seems to really helped my fly away problem is the leave in conditioner. I know your hair is longer and you may not have a dehumidifier but distilled water would be about the same thing.By the way my wonderful wife was so impressed with the way my hair responed she is letting me help her take care of her hair, it has been a beautiful experience for both of us, somthing new after raisig six kids and now ten grand babies.Good Luck!!JJ

Yes, well water can definitely contribute to hair problems. You might want to check out Cher's article in the Tips and Articles section - she's been through it all with the well water. From a chemical standpoint, make sure your shampoo and conditioner both contain EDTA in some form (it might be disodium EDTA, tetrasodium EDTA, etc. - it doesn't really matter), because that is a compound which chelates ("soaks up") the metal ions which cause most well water problems and lets them be rinsed away rather than clinging to your hair. Cher suggests distilled water as a final rinse - this is also likely to help. A water softener or filter, if you don't already have one, may be a possibility to investigate as well - it will have benefits to things other than your hair, too - your detergents will go farther because they will lather better, your clothes will rinse cleaner in the laundry, etc.Good luck!Laura Janelswanson@sunflower.bio.indiana.edu

Please read my article on my experience with water damage. Also, my well water also allowed sun damage, believe it or not! It could have been residue from minerals that the sun used to discolor my hair. Since having a water conditioning system and filter system installed in our home and using distilled water as a final rinse, I can stay out in the sun with no damage. We bought a new boat recently and we have been in the sun every since. Believe me, well water will reek havoc on your hair. If you cannot afford a conditioning system for your house.. definitely try buying jugs of distilled water and use one as a final rinse. It may help. I also use Aveda products which helped to "heal" my hair.. Good luck.. and keep us informed.. Cher~

One friend had really neglected knotted hair that took about 40 minutes to disentangle, but the attention was worth it. be gentle and start from the ends up, just a nice guy with a long hair fetish, benson...
