Question about hair growth cycle

How does one know when their hair has grown as long as it can? I realize that at the end of a hair's growth cycle, it falls out and a new hair starts growing. I want to let my hair grow as long as it will grow. Does your hair get thin on the ends? Taper to a "V" in the back? So far my hair is doing neither and is to my waist. I'm sure that when you notice that your hair is not growing anymore, it's hit that point, but I was wondering if there were any early signs. Thanks!
