QuoteReplyTopic: side layering on long, curly hair Posted: January 12 2000 at 3:19am
Hi,I am thinking about getting layers cut around the sides of my face. Right now my hairis 27" long, curly/wavy and fine texture. It is all one length, except for my bangs, with are layered and curled. Anyoneelse out there with curly, long hair that has layers in front? Should I get them from my jawline down, or farther up? I just wantsome volume going on the sides. I like being able to do pin curls on the long, front length, but still am tempted to go for some layers. Can anyonegive me some thoughts on this? Experience? Thanks!

Thanks!Hi JM,I can offer some thoughts, but I have a couple questions. Is your hair quite curly or does the length pull out your curls into waves? If you cut some layers into the front area, are you going to get defined curls back that will be of different appearance than the rest of your hair. Some people's hair gets curlier the shorter it is. That might be a neat look though.Karen Shelton's hair is somewhat wavey, but I have only seen it straight. I think she said she has some layers in the front coming out of her bangs and likes that look.Since your hair is long, quite short layers "right off the bat" may be too much. How many times have we seen on this board that someone wishes they hadn't cut their hair so short? If you want to try some layers go slow and keep them long to begin with. Get used to the layers and if it is not working you can always go shorter until "YIKES" comes into play. I won't say anything about trying to grow out layers to catch up to the rest of the length, OK?One more thing about layers or shorter tendrils around your face and hair line is that I saw a video of a gal that put up her waist length curly hair into a French twist. First of all, I didn't think that was possible to do with that much length, but then she pulled out some shorter tendrils down from the twist, around her hairline. That really softened the whole style as opposed to the smoother, more business-like look with all the shorter hairs up in the twist. What I am trying to say is that if the layers are too short you may not be able to put them up in an updo if you wear your hair up.Sorry I have rambled and don't know that I have helped, but what do you expect, I'm a guy. *G* Best wishes.Neil
Neil,My hair is pretty curly, but not bushy. My hair is not really all that heavy and do not pull down the curls. My hair is uniformally curly from top to bottom. It looks like I've had a spiral perm (sort of!) I usually scrunch it using a diffuser to accentuate the curl. I can style it straight pretty easily, but it is quite damaging to do so. I have always had layers angling down in front. This is the first time I have had my hair all one length. I like the look of putting hair up in a ponytail (or whatever) and pulling down wisps of hair on the side to soften the look. I would do it for that reason alone. Thanks for the info!JenniferMRelated Link:Ouidad's website
