Single hair strand tangles

You are causing much more damage with your pulling method. You are stretching and stressing the individual hair far beyond the area of the snarl. Hair does not repair itself. That is why we trim split ends just above the juncture of the split. Try using a sewing needle to undo the knot at last resort trim it off.
