I have short medium brown hair and a reddish goatee. I've been thinking about doing something, anything, different because I've had this hairstyle for going on six years. I thought about peroxiding the tips, which seems to be popular these days, but I'm not in college any more and probably can't pull that off. So I'm thinking about just going blonde, or lighter at any rate.I don't want go buy a box of dye from the store and make a horrible mess of the bathroom like my roommate's girlfriend does every time she dyes her hair (I can't tell you how many bath mats and towels I've replaced because they were covered in pumpkin-orange splotches or whatever bizarre color she was using that week).I've heard that you can use chamomile tea to lighten your hair. I like to drink chamomile tea, but I'm not sure about putting it in my shampoo and conditioner. Any suggestions?

hi smitty-chamomile will not lighten your hair. at most, chamomile can accentuate already blonde hair (when left in for some time as a concentrated rinse), but it will NOT lift your brown hair to a blonde color. Rather than do the tips of your hair (which is hard to pull off, even for teens), may I suggest you consider your other option?: go lighter. 1/2 to 1 shade lighter is fairly easy to do at home, using drugstore brand color. If you choose to color at home, please refer to the two excellent articles about hair color on this site. One is now on the home page, the other, written by William, is under the Articles section. reading these will take you maybe 30 minutes, but could save you alot of money, time, frustration, or even hair horror! If you're thinking of going *blonde* please go to a stylist/colorist. You will need to lift a lot of color from your hair--going through that nasty orange stage before you reach blonde. This is something to leave to the pros--not a home job. trust me on this.Another, last suggestion: if you change your hair color, I also suggest losing the goatee. I think it will give you the "new look" you're hoping for. Let me know how things work out.good luck:) silvie
