headbands

I had waist length hair two years ago and then I had it cut very short. I am now letting it grow out.I do not want to style my hair and I am wondering if I can wear a headband until my hair reaches a length where I can wear it in a braid.I have always had trouble getting the top and sides to grow, however the back grows very fast. I think it might be caused by me wearing a headband and pulling the top and sides back. Also, are the L'oreal Casting Color Spa treatments to harsh for hair that is growing out? Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you.Flipr7
