I have been thinking about getting a perm for a while now, but I am really nervous. I have never done anything permanent before. I was told I should just get a body wave, but even that scares me a bit. Any suggestions on how to calm my nerves or a way I can see what i would look like with curly hair before the perm would be appreciated.ThanksJim

This way a cut can reduce the amount of curl and body in the hair. Jim, if your hair is thin this perm will makeit appear thicker. Also,it will change the texture of your hair. Some men have trouble styling their hair and it is because they need to soften it,thus making it more easier for them to work with and control it.SO a perm if done properly can be great for men.Ask your stylist questions, like if i dont like this what options do i have to change it,or look for a picture of a mans hair you like ask will my hair look like this, will this be easy to style?.Good luck Jim

I try to look at hair in a non-sexist fashion, but i guess I do make some exceptions...in general,I like hair that looks healthy, shiny, not overly done but well groomed. as far as perms go, if it's obvious you've had a perm done, then it doesn't look good to me. it looks fake.i think hair looks best in its natural state (color, texture) but since many of us are not blessed with fabulous color or texture, i think it's OK to make some enhancements, so long as they are not too far from what you were born with (Otherwise it just looks fake). i guess i do make exceptions for women's hair color, as they seem to sometimes pull it off better than men can. i know that sounds terribly biased, but it is only my opinion, and i dont mean to offend anyone with it.so, if you are considering a perm, my suggestion is that you make sure it is very well done and natural looking. dont skimp on the cost and please be sure to consult with your stylist, so he/she knows actually what you want.good luck :) silvie

I can understand your initial apprehension, Jim. The first step is the hardest to psych yourself up for, I know. My roommate went through a similar phase when he first started taking perms a year ago. It started really when he decided to grow his beard out our senior year in boarding school. He's the kind of guy with a real heavy growth and he has to shave every morning, sometimes in the evening too if there was a mixer or social. So he figured he'd save himself the hassle and bag a few more morning snores with his new found time. Within a month or so he had a broad mustache and a good beard with great coverage. But as the beard continued to develop over the following month or so it got real wooly, curly, and a bit unruly, despite the fact that on his head he had wavy, thick medium brown hair. He didn't like the incongruity of the curly beard and straightish hair on his head, but he certainly wasn't ready to bag the beard. Then the idea came to us came to us of his getting a perm as a way to have his hair match the beard after we were at a museum doing some sketching for our Art class of these classical busts. All the guys had these curly beards and these loose curls falling down their heads. It must have been a week or so,but, he surfed the net, wrote to a few salons, sent pics and had some imaging done. Then he just went for it, a loose spiral perm. It looked great! He's kept the lenght at about 8 or 9 inches I'd guess, so that the curls cover his ears and the back of his neck and gets his perm now every other month or so. When I saw him over the summer, before we left for college, he had some hi-lighting done as well and his hair looked terrific.I think you'll be glad you did it and just try to find a stylist who is willing to assist you witrh some advance imaging. Good luck, Jim> I have been thinking about getting a perm for a while> now, but I am really nervous. I have never done> anything permanent before. > What do women think of Men with perms?Women like nice looking hair on men.Hair that seems to have a style. If your hair looks untamed and untouched (meaning,no time spent on it at all) this can give women an opinion of you.It could make them think you do not care about personal appearance.Every women likes their man to look good.Getting a perm won't make women think anything, but he cares about his appearance.Good luck Just remember to ask the right questions.Find out your options in the case you wouldn't like it.Take a picture of a style that you like and ask if your hair will look like this.A perm will change the texture of your hair Jim so it should make it easy for you style. a womans opinion rae

Jim,Take it easy! You need to get some of the Caruso rollers you can pick-up at any Walgreens,CVS, or the like. Then have your intimate partner, or someone who you know would enjoy getting into your hair work with you of an evening. Shower or bathe and shampoo and condition. While the hair is still wet you and your partner (the partner will ahve more work than you) section your hair and set the rollers. Some guys use gel also fore firmer set. Then once it has dried put a silk scarf over your head as a kerchief. Sleep on it and in the morning have your partner carefully release the curlers and remove. That should give you a fair sense of the look before committing to a perm.Good luck, man.> I have been thinking about getting a perm for a while> now, but I am really nervous.
