The ends of your hair have no bearing on the hair follicle that produces the hair! Each hair on your head has a certain "life span." If the hair is not split or otherwise damaged, then hopefully that single hair will reach its life expectancy.

However, trims are recommended for a couple of reasons. One, when a hair splits at the end, nothing, NOTHING will repair it. It`s much better to cut off that split end when it`s less than an inch than when the split travels up several inches.

Every single one of us loses strands of hair every day. It`s normal and healthy! Once a hair falls out (or is pulled out -- ouch!), then another hair grows out of that same follicle. Since the hairs on our head are not all exactly the same age, they won`t be exactly the same length. Therefore, when you trim your hair, even just a tiny bit, the ends of the hair are more even with each other. Notice how the ends of your hair seem thicker right after a trim? The hair structure has not changed at all. But the individual hairs are simply more even at the end, so it looks healthier and feels thicker.

Thus, trims help the hair look healthier by keeping the ends more even. And trims get rid of the split ends before the split ends travel up and make the hair look awful and frizzy.

No matter what condition the ends of the hair are in, the hair growing out of the head will not be affected by cutting the hair -- either by a lot or a little. Obviously, the shorter the hair the more noticeable the hair growth.

Please find someone you can really trust and get regular trims! Some people need trims more often than others. I`d follow the advice of a professional who thoroughly understands what your hair goals are.

Good luck!

I have to take issue with the trims help hair grow idea. People should realze how long it takes hair to grow:
it only goes about a half inch every month. With that kind of growth, you wouldn`t want a trim while
you`re trying to gain length. My advice:

-instead of experimenting with trimming, experiment with NOT trimming. don`t trim unless your hair LOOKS
like it`ll be damaged if you don`t

-trim off individual split ends yourself, or get your spouse/friend to do it for you

-see if you can live with split ends. They are not so bad, but having too much hair cut off is

I think that if you want real long hair, it`s better if you can manage to do it without trims at all. It is my
time-worn observation that salons and long hair don`t mix. If I had long hair, or a girlfriend with long hair
(or, if I were a girl whose boyfriend long hair), I`d rather that hair had some splits than that it be treated
by someone who may cut off too much, prod me/my friend for a "change", make my hair smelly, maybe
even pass on an infection (it happens, ew, and long hair or cutting it yourself avoids that).

Of course, if the look of your long hair requires a straight/oval bottom edge or (like with most long heads)
that it comes down to only a certain length, a trim is inevitable, but at least don`t slow down growth by
trimming while you`re reaching that length.

Duke,

You said, "see if you can live with split ends. They are not so bad, but having too much hair cut off is"

With all due respect, have you seen hair that has never been trimmed? Quite frankly, it`s what gives long hair a bad name. Once a hair is split, it keeps on splitting, and before you know, you have a head full of split end frizz. It isn`t attractive or lovely in the least. At that point, you either get short hair or very unhealthy, unattractive long hair. Personally, my goal is long, healthy hair, not just long hair. Who wants a head full of ugly, but long hair?

Please notice I didn`t say a trim every six weeks. One should trim his hair however often it needs it. We`re all different. For some it may be 4-5 months or even longer. I also didn`t say to go to a salon. A trustworthy person, whether in a salon or elsewhere is what is paramount.

You`ll notice that a thread down on this forum is from a woman who hasn`t cut her hair in over two years and now may have to sacrifice a few inches because she didn`t take care of it.

PLEASE take care of long hair! Trims don`t have to be real frequent and not much has to be taken off. But to tell someone NOT to ever trim is quite frankly, rotten advice. Guaranteed she`ll come back later, crying, because her hair looks awful, and the only solution will be to cut it.

Hair that is healthy and taken good care of is the best hair. Look at Karen of the Hair Boutique. She has absolutely stunningly gorgeous hair. And yes, she gets trims, and that`s why it looks the way it is.

One can have long hair or one can have long, HEALTHY hair. I can`t imagine anyone opting for the former.

Leaving split ends alone is like leaving a stupid run in your pantyhose. It runs and it runs fast and next thing you know what might have just been 1/2 or less ends up being 3 inches or more. With long hair the usual advice that I have heard is to trim every six months or so. Nothing looks worse than a long hair with full of split ends. Pamper it , take care of your health and relax etc . Jennifer made two very good points that should be listened. I will have to say that nothing feels better than having a good trim and feeling that your lenght has nice thickness. Very nice. Yes Duke hair takes a very long time to grow and that is why we should always take care of it.

Hmmm. I see what you mean. I have seen split ends, and they seemed like something hardly noticeable.
But if that`s the experience people have, all I can say is to be careful. And take hair vitamins if you can
afford them. They seem to go a long way in keeping hair healthy and making it grow quicker. What I do
wonder is how Dianne Witt could have managed that amazing length of hair and, from what I understand,
had not cut it in years. Anyone know her story?

Duke,

Hair length is determined by genetics. Believe it or not, some people cannot honestly grow their hair below their shoulders, no matter how well they take care of their hair! And yet, others can grow it below their feet.

I`m sure I could find a 100 year-old person who has smoked most of his adult life. Does that mean that we should all smoke so that we can live as long as that person?

There are exceptions to every rule. It is a fact that a split end cannot mend itself. And left to its own devices, it will split farther up the hair shaft.

Good point about smoking, Jenn. I wish more young people could understand that.
