I don't think there's any way to avoid getting it on the scalp since you have to if you want to bleach the roots. It's odd for it to say that...

When I used 30 volume developer and a high lift color on my light brown hair, it took many many times of doing it (more than 10, and leaving it on 45 minutes each time) before I finallly got it to yellow. If you're starting from black, it will probably take many more times of doing it, and go through some orange stages before you get there. (Use a high lift blonde dye with a green base to help you get past the orange stage).

There's been some disagreement on this board of whether or not you should use 40 volume developer. Some say it's more damaging than its worth, and you don't need it because 30 will work fine. But 40 volume is certainly quicker, and doing it repeatedly to get what you want with 30 volume seems like it would be just as damaging. I'm not a professional, so I can't tell you which is better, only relay my own experience. I tell you so you can weigh it, and maybe others will weigh in too.

p.s. If you bought blue dye, it seem like it would be better to use it on light orange hair to avoid it coming out green like it may on yellow hair? Anyone have an opinion on that?
