Hello! I had my naturally dark brown hair professionally colored medium auburn/red (level 6/7). I'm noticing that as I wash my hair more and more, the color at the roots seems to be fading at a faster rate than the ends. At the time I had the color initially done (exactly 10 days ago, to be precise) the roots were ever so slightly lighter than the ends, but, the color difference was minimal. Now that I've washed my hair a few times, the color difference between the roots and ends seems to be getting more pronounced. From my past experience as a redhead, color fading is generally a given, but, this is the first time that I've noticed the roots fading at a quicker rate than the rest of the hair. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

I had something similar happen...I wound up with bright red on my head, and my length was almost brown. That was a salon job too. (My length was more porous/ damaged than the 6 inches close to my head, so it absorbed darker color...I was going from blonde to red) I was lucky because it was summer so I just wore hats until the length faded to the same red as the top.

I guess you only really have a couple of choices.
1. Leave it and don't worry about it/ wear scarves or hats. (Not a very good permanant solution).
2. Try repeated washing and conditioning on the length only to get it to fade more.
3. Go back to the salon and tell them to redye it. (It sounds to me like since you were going from darker to lighter red, maybe they just got more dye (peroxide) on your scalp than on your length? I don't know, that really shouldn't be a problem but it's odd that your roots wound up lighter than the length, which by nature is naturally more damaged).

To Susan W: It seemed odd to me as well that the roots were becoming lighter than the ends, especially since the roots are the healthiest part of the hair and should really stay true in color. When I went to the salon, I was making a color change from medium brown with golden blonde highlights, to medium auburn/red - which I've had before. My natural is very dark brown. I called my colorist to discuss the problem, and she said that this was occuring because I had a lot of greys (premature, I might add) and the dye is apparently not holding onto those greys as well as it is on the ends of the hair. Her recommendation was to concentrate my shampoo on the lenght of the hair, and not to use a shampoo for color-treated hair, in the hope that this will even out the color more. If this doesn't work, she said that I could come in to see her, before I'm due for my touch-up in a few weeks. She claimed that the next time I come in, she will use more 7N, and that should help the situation. I'm not really sure what that means, but, we'll see....

Oooooooh, grays could do it. I'm glad she has a plan for preventing it next time, she sounds knowledgable.

To Kris408: When you said that I should have my colorist re-pigment the ends of my hair, I didn't realize that is what you meant. I thought that the re-pigmenting remedy would be used on someone with the opposite problem to the one I'm experiencing, meaning, roots are darker than the ends. I now understand what you meant. Hopefully, this will rectify the situation. The color difference isn't all that noticeable, but it bothers me, so, I'm going to the salon this weekend.

Thanks.
