So here's the thing..I have a naturally dark blond hair & been coloring it black for about 4 months now.I use natural instincts which is semipermanent color, because i think it is less likely to damage my hair, since it has no peroxide or ammonia. But is that true? I color it about once every two months but not just roots,I color the whole hair. Will that damage my hair in the long run since I want to keep this color? Would it be better to use permanent color? And in the end,is it possible that the current color will wash out if i discontinue using it,considering that I already have about 4 boxes in my hair, regarding the fact that it is semipermanent..I know this is a lot of questions & would appreciate any suggestions you might have.Thanx a lot! If you start using permanent color every month on the ends as well as the roots, you will be guaranteeing yourself ruined hair. You may not see it at first but it does build up over time.
As for the NI washing out, I think that's different for everyone, just depending on how your hair holds onto color. I used to go darker using NI, and leaving it on for 40 minutes instead of 10 like the box says.. it held better than any permanent color I've ever used, but without so much damage. It does have a low level of peroxide in it, so pulling it through your ends every time probably will end up damaging your hair, although not nearly as bad as a permanent color, which uses a higher volume of peroxide.
peroxide based semi's usually have only 10 vol developer, for deposit-only. But since i dunno the exact amount in nat. instincts, it could be from 10-15 vol. at the most....so that's nothing to worry abt :). Permanents on the other hand, always have 20 vol. for around one level of lift, except for the feria power reds which contain 25 vol. Although 30 volume is more effective for creating a higher level of lift on esp. dark hair. So basically 30 and 40 volumes are used in bleaches or colors to provide high levels of lift. Hope this helps!

NI has about 12 v peroxide and usually it will give a little lift, but your going darker so no biggie. Permanent tints( 20v give 1-2 levels lift)) are permanent but you do your roots only and you don't pull through. If you do your roots once, your hair should be fine. If you need to use a deposit color- a demi color you can but just for a few min, it is deposit only so the color will be more concentrated.
I have a neat little tip for u! If ur really worried abt damaging ur hair w/ any amt of peroxide i suggest getting a tub of black manic panic hair dye and using that occasionally to refresh the ends (or even roots hehe)....Also take a tsp. of manic panic dye and mix it w/ ur shampoo and shampoo ur hair, and do everytime u wash ur hair! It'll def. keep ur dark hair look fresh and prevent too much fading. Note that manic panic does no damage wht so ever!.
