Which is more damaging to your hair? Dark or light color?
The reason I ask is that I have highlights that are growing out and I want to cover them up because I have really dark hair. But I don't want to damage what I have already grown out (though I did when I got it TRed..) Is it going to damage my dark roots more to get it all colored one color?

If your highlights are from bleach what your talking about is called a tintback. Tintbacks on bleached hair fade, so you have to refresh the color a couple of times.
If you want you can strand test some deposit only color too see how your hair will handle it. Natural Instincts or Castings are deposit only colors or demi permanent's. What you need to do is fill the strand with a red a level lighter than what you want:
ex- If you want to tint dark brown( level 4 with most companies) use a medium red level 5 and then you can color with a level 4 dark brown.
You don't want to use a red the same level as the dark color bc it will go black- unless thats what your going for. It will probably deposit very dark, but that will fade with washings.
