I have dyed blonde hair. I first have to use a bleach because my natural color is dark brown. My problem is trying to get my toners/semi-permanent colors to stay. My hair must be so porous that the color can wash away/fade in as little as a week. I think once I had a nice color stick around for about 2 weeks before it faded right down to just that "raw" bleached look.

I've been told about fillers but can't seem to get any good brand names recommened or when or how to use them.

Is a filler some kind of protein conditioner that says it re-constructs or infuses the hair cuticle with some sort of protein?

Any help is appreciated.

I was hoping a professional would answer so I could know too! I have a guess, but I'm not sure I'm right.

I think a filler is when you dye your bleached hair with a color close to what you want, but with one base (say, a brown dye with a red base), which will result in fake looking reddish hair, then you dye again over that with another color close to what you want with the opposing base (say, a brown with a green base). If you used only one of these dyes, you'd get either bright fake looking red, or green (whichever base you used), and not really brown. But using both they counter the bases of each other, and you get a more natural looking brown that should stay a little longer. Therefore, the first color you put on is a filler to help the second dye job come out natural looking. It's the color that's "filling"...I don't believe fillers add any protein to the hair or anything like that.

Someone, do let me know if I'm wrong.

If your hair is bleached white, it will be difficult to keep it darker. (I've been there). Everything is going to fade because of the hair's porosity, but using a filler to get a natural looking color will help it to look more natural as it fades.

Thanks Susan for your reply.

Just so you know, I don't want to go back to brown, I just wanted something to help a nice blonde toner to stay in my hair longer. I do want to stay a blonde.

Thanks again,
Lisa

a filler is for when, say ,you want to go back to your natural color, which you clearly dont want to do...It has no protein, nothing like that...It is simply a base color. The reason your "semi-permannat" color is washing out is because, exactly that--its "SEMI-permanant" ...If you want lasting power--your going to want to get a "permanant" color... To put it in simplest terms...There is Demi-perm, that stays a few washes, Semi-perm that stays a few more, and permanant which should stay (for the most part) until your hair grows out... But please do a strand test once you find a permanant color that you like, because once its in--its not coming out! :) Also--You can also help your color stay by using a gentle shampoo and conditioner specifically FOR color..I find that Matrix's line works relly well, and they have a deep conditioning treatment to go along with it.

Thanks Sara, for clarifying fillers!

Ladymax, Sorry about the confusion, I thought you were trying to go darker and that's what was fading.
If you want to be blonde, fading really shouldn't be a problem. It sounds to me like you are using toner to get a good blonde, but since toners fade out, it might work better if you bleached to a slightly lower level (almost as light as you want - definitely past the orange stage into yellow), then used a permanant dye that lifts the rest of the way and puts the natural tone on it via the base color. (Meaning if you're lifting to yellow, then you dye it with a blonde shade that has a violet base, it would counter the yellow and you should get a natural looking shade that doesn't fade).
