i had hair extensions put in about 6 weeks ago. i have encountered a great deal of matting and tangling last week. i don't know if it is time for them to come out or maybe the stress i put on the extensions when taking out the tangles. please help anyone.

what kind of extensions/hair do you have? if the hair isnt high-quality, sometimes it gets tangley after a month or two. even so, you shouldn't have to tighten them until two or three months. how bad is the matting?

Sounds like the hair you have is the type where the cuticles are not running in the same direction. Any movement at all on your part where your hair shifts, the strands start rubbing together and you end up with a mess.

The only advice I can give based on your description is to take the hair out and throw it in the garbage. And do it soon.

Sorry :(

That sounds like Cinderella Hair They look great when they're brand new but once you wash them a few times they are out of control! I've had them before, i know how bad it is... It's nothing you did wrong, it's the hair! It has a silicone layer that makes it all soft and great to begin with but it washes off after a few shampoos and you're left with a mess...

Sadly, there's really nothing you can do to change this... you'll have to get new extensions put in... and definately don't get the same kind again!

You might be able to find a good stylist by posting where you're located and haveing the people on this site refer you somewhere.

Good luck,
Kristin

what type of products are you using? that can be the source of your tangling and matting. If your cuticle was reversed, that is when the hair isn't gathered properly and the cuticle is facing different directions, it would mat into a ball at your nape and you would never be able to untangle it. If the products you are using have too much wax or silicone it will coat the extension cause them to tangle try using a clarifying shampoo to remove the build up and use a conditioner like, SLinky by Sebastian, Bumbumble and bumble Super rich Conditioner, along with using bumble and bumble prep spray. Good luck!

Toria,
What kind of extensions did you get? Was it a sew in?

You probably used lesser quality hair where the cuticles are facing different directions. The makers put like this silicone coating on the hair to make it manageable but it wears off after about a week and the hair becomes a nightmare.

However you can make it manageable again buy relaxing the hair with one of the those relaxers they sell at Sally's for Black hair. This puts a coating back on the hair to make it manageable.

It's easy to relax the hair with a sew in because your own hair is all braided up and you don't want the relaxer to get on your natural hair. With GL and links and stuff, you'd risk getting the relaxer on your own hair.

But when you get extensions, next time use a virgin remi hair. I only recommend the cheaper hair when you only plan to wear it for a few days.

GL

I had my extensions sewn in. I am using Kera Care products. Just the other day, I had them taken out because the matting and tangling were really bad. Thanks for your information. It was really helpful. I would like to know if there is any other method that I can use to put in hair extensions, because I experienced a LOT of hair loss and wanted to know if this was normal. I'd really like to try something else, but I'm afraid that it will damage my hair, and I can't afford to lose another strand of hair. Haha. So any other advice would be really appreciated. Thanks, guys.

Hi toria,

You lost a lot of hair with a sew in?

Well, to be honest, a sew in weave is usally the least damaging on your hair because all of your natural hair is cornrowed up and therefore should be protected.

If your sew-in has been in for 6-8 weeks and you take it out, I think it's normal to lose a handful of hair because of normal shedding. It may seem like a lot because you're seeing it all at once but it's normal.

But in all honesty, sew-ins are the safest. You may want to try a lacefront wig like Beyonce and Tyra wears, but it's a wig.

Here's a site that explains a few different weave techniques, if you look around they also explain the difference in quality of hair.

Hi, I am mostly a lurker on this board, but I had to reply to this thread. I've had many types of extensions/weaves/hair additions (with the exception of microlinks or hairlocs) and the sew-in weave was the most damaging method for me. I had it done by an african american hairstylist and she braided my cornrows super super tight. I had the weave in only for a couple of weeks, and when I took it out I lost about 25% of my hair. some of it never grew back and I have a permanet bald spot on the side of my head. I'm sure I am probably a rare case and this wouldn't happen to most people. I am currently wearing pinchbraids which I really like but since I seem susceptible to permanet traction hairloss I worry about this happening with the pinchbraids, although everything seems to be okay for now. For the record, I've had 2 applications of great lengths and didn't experience much damage, a bit of breakage here and there but nothing like is often described on the boards!

Thanks for your input. I like to get as much info as I
can, being that this is all to me. In my opinion, I think that the stylist put too many tracks in and that is what caused all the tangling ang matting. If this is not true, can someone let me know? Thanks.

How many tracks do you have in? The track I had done in the past was more for thickness and not for length... First I had two put in and found that it was hard to keep them brushed properly... I got some tangling in between them but no where else. I resorted to only having one track after that and it worked out great :o) The only problem is that if you're starting with short hair one track will not be enough for you. If you want to still do tracks just make sure you at least get great quality hair and always make sure to brush in between them. I've tried TONS of hair and the best by far is Bohyme (it's gorgeous!!!!!) You can google the brand name but I usually buy it online at superhairfactory.com they have the best prices at $100-$115 for a package of 18'' hair. One package will definately be enough for a full head.

Good luck! Let us know how it turns out.

kristin, thanks for the link--i've never found a hair seller who will match the best price you kind find--yeeeaaahhh! have you ever used the Bohyme body wave (the one that looks like it's been set in big rollers). i love the look of it, but i wonder how the texture holds up after washing.

Hi! I had 6 tracks put in. My hair is about 2 inches past my shoulders. And I just wanted a little fullness. Having that many was a nightmare. Too much tangling and matting and it was mainly in the middle.

I havent used the body wave yet but I have a customer who will probably be ordering it in the next month or so. I completely trust this brand because I've never had any problems with any of their hair. Let me know if you try it and I'll do the same for you.

toriaX- 6 tracks seems like a lot but then again they do charge per row so I'd imagine they just wanted to make some extra $. I'm not for sure though because I never needed that many but I would think you could get away with three if you doubled the weft on each row. Usually when I get tracks done I have two rows of wefts sewn on to each track.

Give that a try next time and try a different brand of hair. Your results should be better

You shouldn't have any matting, especially ot this soon unless the extensions have hair placed upside down (i.e. cuticles are grabbing at each other. I see Easter Carrillo, and she's been doing extensions for almost 20 years. Give her a call afternoons and she'll tell you (NO CHARGE) what's going on. 323-356-5856. BUT HURRY, she leave for Brasil in 2 weeks for 3 or 4 months.
