I have an entire head of extensions in with shrinkies. I am now going on 4 weeks with NO DAMAGE! Unlike Hairlocs which broke my hair off, there is no breakage with these after one month.

You can buy shrinkies through Dr Locks.

http://drlocks.net/shrinkies.htm

The light glue inside the shrinkie comes off with vegetable oil! I read somewhere that someone removed it with the oil and I thought, "no way!" I had been using acetone.

Guess what? I tried it tonight and the residue comes off with oil. One pass and whooooooooooop it was gone!

Rejoice! Rejoice!

that's great, amm. i'm glad its working out--how does it compare to the links in terms of visibility? they look so small and undetectable--more than any other method i've seen.

That's great!

Now I want to try them.
How many did you put in total? How many did you lose in the 4 weeks? Did you do them with pre-tipped hair or bulk hair?

That's so cool! I'll buy them instead of microrings, then.

the dr locks site says to remove the shrinkies you should heat and crack and use acetone. using the oil is that all you had to do? just curious. its always good to know what is what out there....thanks

Visibility - I find them to be much less detectable that microrings. I feel less self-conscious when I'm somewhere and I have people very close behind me.
The shrinkies are completely clear and match whatever your hair color is. They shrink down to fit whatever the size of your pre-tipped strand is. The smaller the strand, the smaller the shrinkie is. I, however, wear my strands thicker so I can get a lot more volume with less strands in. I probably have 100-125 thick strands which would be about 200-225 normal size. I never use bulk hair. I tried it once and had a mess. Whenever I pulled the hair off the stack, some strays would always manage to come with and I ended up with hair on the floor and uneven tips that I would have to trim up. I always use weft hair.

hairextender - No, I will not call you. My bad Hairlocs experience is nothing you can rectify. Unless you want to refund me over $2,000 and miraculously put the hair back on my head that was lost? And let me specify something -- I didn't actually lose it from my head. Yes, some were pulled out because of the weight but the majority of it is broken right where the shell was clamped shut. When I pull my hair back, you can see all the little broken hairs sticking straight out. I feel sorry for anyone who is pulled in by the promise of healthier hair and winds up with less than half of what they started with.

Did you buy the heat clamp tool Dr Locks carries, or are you using something else to heat shrink them with?

Hi amm,

I have a FHI ceramic 1" flat iron that heats up to 480 degrees. Do you thinks that's sufficent to melt the shrinkie or do I need the wand?

Yes, I have the same heat clamp that they sell at Dr. Locks and it works perfectly for the shrinkies. I have also used it for fusion extensions so it'll work for that, too.

I'm not sure about the flat iron. I have a flat iron but it's way too cumbersome to use for shrinkies. You use the heat wand to take the shrinkies out, too, so it's a pretty good investment, imo.

As an update - I just maintenanced my extensions tonight and again I just have to say there's no damage to my hair and vegetable oil on a cotton square removed the shrinkie residue. I just can't wipe the smile off my face right now!

Hi Amm,
As you probably know, I have Hairlocs currently, and I was wondering about the Shrinkies. It sounds like the process is somewhat like Great Lengths as far as attaching the bonds to your hair with heat. I'm kind of concerned because when I had Great Lengths and the bonds came out, they pulled out all the hair that they were attached to, and with the Hairloc's I don't have that problem, at least not like with the Great Lengths. I do however have alot of the bonds slipping out. I would rather have that problem then having the bond and all the hair it's (the bond) attached to ripping out of my head. Can you please clarify the process of Shrinkies? Thanks for the info! and thanks for making me laugh.

Here's a demo on how to do shrinkies.

I just bought some shrinkies last night at Home Depot for $1.50. I'm a test them out tonight to see how they work.

At Home Depot? What department do they sell them in, and what did they intend for you to do with them? Rewire your outlets?

I bought heat shrink tubing. It was in the electrical aisle. It's purpose is to hold electrical wires together.

I've never seen the "shrinkies" by Dr. Locks but I highly doubt it's some new invention, I'd be willing to bet it's the same stuff they sell at hardware stores just branded differently.

Anyway, I experimented with my $1.50 shrinkies and I like these a lot better than the microlincs. I think it's a lot gentler on the hair.

The shrinkies I bought did not have an adhesive on it so I tried it two ways. One, by making a prebonded tip using fusion glue and the other with no glue and the verdict is that you definitely need the glue. It didn't shrink tight enough without the glue and it slid off.

I did it twice with the glue, I used a lot and then just a dab. I like the bond with the dab of glue. It bonded nicely and a lot more secure than the microlinks.

I would next like to try the shrinkies that have the adhesive already in them. They didn't have those at Home Depot though. I'll have to find a place that sells them, I doubt I'll shell out $30 to test dr. locks

Also they only had black tubing at Home Depot, I have dark hair so it's okay with me. They had some clear ones at Radio Shack but there were red and blue one's in the pack also.

So if anyone wants to try the shrinkie's cheaply... get some at Home Depot.

Afropuffs - right on!

Over the past month or so I've gone to Home Depot, Lowe's, Orchard Supply, Kragen, Pep Boys and a Mom n' Pop place to find the clear tubes. The only ones I've found so far are the black and the colored ones just like you said. The ones that have no adhesive do not work. They will slip out of your hair as fast as you can put them in.

Dr. Locks says their shrinkies are lightly coated with "fusion" glue on the inside. I have no proof that it's not fusion glue but I think they're selling plain old electric wiring tubing and that it's not glue for the hair. My thoughts? So what. It works and it's not damaging my hair, they're hard to see, they shrink small and hold onto my hair and the glue is easy to remove.

For those using the Internet to find some -- do a search for adhesive lined heat shrink tubing. What you'll want is 1/8" clear tubing that is adhesive coated and you'll have your very own shrinkies at an amazing low price.

Amm,

since you have the adhesive lined ones, do you think you need glue on the hair also? Or would tips not prebonded work?

The tubing I bought isn't adhesive lined but I dipped my tips in fusion glue(not the keraitn type) and it worked great. I know you use Liquid Gold for your tips but I'm wondering if you even need to put anything on the tips with the adhesive lined tubing? Just kinda dampen the tip, roll it and stick it in the shrinkie.

I guess the clear adhesive lined tubing is hard to find. They had something close at Boater's World but it had a tint to it.

I "Froggled" for tubing on Google and found a ton of onsite stores that sell it though.

I originally tipped the weft hair because I was using microrings. I guess one wouldn't have to do the pretipping and just do like you say -- stick the ends in and then shrink the shrinkie.

I would still have reservations on using bulk hair, though. There might be shedding issues and then there's the stray hairs that might stick out of the top of the shrinkie. Also, if I dropped the strand, I'd have to gather it back up. I've never had much luck with bulk hair.

I also just ordered a foot of adhesive lined clear shrink tubing from a site online for less than a buck. If it's good stuff, I'll post where I bought it.

this idea has totally intrigued me- what about when it grows out, do you replace the hair and start all over again, or can you reuse the hair that you slid out?

Amm-- I think I agree about tipping the ends, it's much easier to insert. I'm like you, I use weft hair and cut.. bulk is a nightmare.

Just wondering though since the shrinkie has adhesive and the tip will have adhesive if we're double dipping. Just looking for the safest way.

Cait - You can reuse the hair. It's not like with microrings though. Because you use heat to apply the shrinkie and take it off the tip really isn't bonded nicely together anymore. Just cut the tip off and retip. But you can't reuse the shrinkie though.
