I never realized how many different brands of hair extensions there were until now,WOW!I didn't know about any methods hair extensions other then hair weaves until recently.I just recently. My cousins friend told me about great lengths and she actually taught the classs for great lengths and did the certifying! So,I got certified and started doing Great Lengths.I love doing hair extensions.I like it more then all other hair services! The money is insane!I can't get many customers, and have tried advertising here and there - but most people aren't interested when they find out the cost! I thought that they were the only company co. that sold extensions,It's very interesting reading about other companies and their methods! Thanks for sharing so much knowledge ladies-It looks like I might have to learn other techniques that are more affordable to people!

Welcome to the boards, Adina! With your GLs training, you should easily be able to segue into lots of different methods at various price points: cheaper forms of fusion, shrinkies, extendtubes, etc. And with a little practice, I'm sure you can pick up some braiding techniques. Sometimes, I think it's hard to get clients when you're first starting out because everyone wants to see a website with a lot of photos. So if you can find some more cost-effective ways to get a few clients who would be willing to be photographed, I'm sure that would help a lot.

Anyway, welcome, and good luck! :)

mergutherie-I have been thinking this also.I don't have any idea what to charge though.I have been calling around different places and it seems like the going rate is 200 per bundle plus 325 additional labor charge! So I am trying to decide on an affordable and reasonable price.I also wanted to do it outside the salon(working out of my basement)Any suggestions on a price?I was thinking of dropping the 325 labor fee considering that the hair only costs $98.50 dollars for a bundle of (24").maybe even charging 180 per bundle,(The average head takes 3 to 4 bundles.Sound OK?I also don't recall them(Great Lengths) telling us prices for removal. Some reps charge 100 an hour to remove them.I haven't been charging people for removal and it takes me hour to remove the extensions because I am very careful and it takes me longer.(avoiding breakage)If there arte any great lengths reps out there please help!

I do believe you should chrage for removal.

my ex fiance is a hair dresser (how oyu think I got involved? lol) and a lot of his friends are as well. they usually charge between $75 - $100 an hour for removal UNLESS they're doing another full head of extensions with them, in which case it drops to $25 an hour to free, depending on the type of extensions they put in.

Yeah, I charge for removal. I hate to, because the service doesn't add any value to the client's life, but it -is- my time and I should get paif for it and all. So I tend to charge a nominal fee for it- mostly just enough to make it worthwhile for me to have done the appointment.

Anyway- $325, plus the cost of hair, isn't too bad for GL. Many GL stylists charge a lot more. But when you're new, people aren't likely to trust you with several hundred dollars right off the bat, so try and get yourself a few "guinea pigs"- people who pay only materials costs, with the understanding that you will be taking eight million photos of them and putting them online on your web portfolio (and if you don't already have one- make one!) Then you can have the photos and testimonials on your site, and people will feel like they know what they're getting into better.

Also, in case it hasn't already been mentioned to you; when you make an appointment, require a deposit that covers the cost of the hair. Clients are usually nice, but they're also wishy-washy sometimes, and you could get screwed out of several hundred dollars by a client who changes their mind. Get cash on the barrelhead, and only -then- should you order the client's hair. Once people have put down money on a decision, they change their mind a lot less. :)

-Rae

That's a real good deal for GLs, and I would definitely charge an hourly rate for removal. Even if you provide discounted rates, which is a good idea since you're building up your portfolio, you should always charge something for your time, imo. In fact, nobody should really work for free, unless it's something they're doing for their community, family, or church, etc. I've done free work a few times in the past for people--not hair--and lived to regret it, because it set a certain unrealistic expectation that they were always going to get free work and because people often don't take you as seriously if you do. It breaks down the professionalism level somewhat, imo. You think people are going to be universally appreciative of that sort of thing, but invariably, it doesn't really work out that way.

Anyway, I would definitely suggest that you get a few models, preferably ones who are somewhat photogenic, who have various kinds of hair. If you're doing GLs, I would also recommend that you stick with people who either A) have had fusion before and are familiar with the process, or B) have strong, healthy hair to begin with. Maybe some of your existing clients would be willing to be shot from the back or side, rather than the front. And when you do get those photos ready to post, make sure you watermark them! (Kristin, among others, has done this on her site, which is smart because people steal these photos all the time.) After the first extensions I got, I found my picture on some German hair extensions site. I was like, whaaaattt? So be sure to protect your work.

Good luck, and keep us posted! :)

Yes-I to have been taken for granted for going out of my way for people.Maybe I will charge 50 dollars an hour,I feel tht's reasonable considering GL is expensive enough, besides,I'll probably get more work that way!Thank you ladies for your great advice!!
So should I charge 200 a bundle or 200 a bunle plus 325?(I didn't quite understand your response ?

325 plus what YOU pay for a bundle, not what a customer pays for a bundle.

though you don't have to SAY it that way, you can say it another way bc it will still be a FANTAB deal to them!!!!!

Well, I'd just give them the hair at cost, then charge them whatever hourly rate you feel comfortable with. How long do you think it'll take you to do a full head?

Let's say the hair costs $400 and you charge $50 an hour (both for removal and application). And let's say the process takes you six hours. The client would pay $700, which is a very, very good price for GLs, and you'd net $300 and get your photos. That's just one way to do it, though.

By the way, I do think all extensionists should offer free fixes. So, if there are minor adjustments that need to be made after the fact, a little additional cutting, or replacing a few that fall out, I do think that should be for free. :)

I have been charging 100 dollars an hour plus the cost of the hair so I guess We think rhe same.I thinkthat's reasonable amount of money an hour!It usually takes me 45 min to an hour per bundle, depending on the clients cooperation,Some move around so much,or are always getting up and doing something or other ,like talking on their cell phones, getting things out of their pocketbooks, things of that sort.It also depends on how I am feeling also, some times I just seem faster then other times.I don't charge for adjustments at all.I figure these people are paying so much money, why add on to it when the hair only lasts for like 4 months.I have this one staedy client who lives a few blocks away and she is always at my house adjusting, removing, adding etc.She is my absolute best client.I never charge her extra because She is always having me straighten her hair and orders hair almost every month.I tell people when they come for a consultation that I don't charge to adjust and Removal is free if they get extensions replaced if not I charged 1 girl so far 75 dollars (She was the only one who didn't get them replaced. She had to have them out for a modeling job and she was moving to california.I figure if I do it this way,I will win over clients from other GL Reps.I also tell clients that if for every customer that they can get me it will be 100 dollars off their service! They seem to like that..That's how I got all of my clients, from word of mouth. What does anyone thinkabout handing out flyers or buisness cards? At maybe The Mall on the week-Ends?Do you think it's Cheezey?

No. I don't think it's cheesy. You're still trying to build up your clientele, so of course, you're going to have to get the word out. If I were you, I'd think about advertsing on Craig's List. So many people visit that site, and it's free to place an ad (the last I heard, anyway). If there are any local papers that would enable you to advertise inexpensively, they might be a good option too.

Once you get your website up and running, it'll be much easier to get new business. People will be able to link to your site from the GLs one and find you through searches etc. :)
