I appreciate all of the AMAZING information on this site. I've been reading for days now.

I got extensions at a salon once a couple years back but they were SO expensive and hurt my real hair so I stopped. The extensions looked very stringy after a week and too thin also. The hairdresser attached less than 100 - maybe about 80 - and I dont think it was enough for me.

Now I want to try to do my own with shrink links, braids or rings. I have pretty short hair thats straight and fine and want to go to 24 inches.

Is this realistic? Is there a way to avoid the probelms I had before?

Thank you.

Hi Robyn and welcome!

I think 24 inches is certainly a possibility, especially if your hair is straight, but it depends; you may need to go a bit shorter and cut layers, or not--it really all depends.

I think all the methods you mentioned are good choices, but for DIY, you might find extendtubes or shrinkies easier than braiding, which requires more practice, imo.

Stringiness is an ongoing issue for many of us with strand-by-strand extensions. With wefts, you can pretty much eliminate the stringiness issue, but wefts can present their own challenges. That said, 80 strands of any method for a full head seems skimpy to me.

There are several stylists on this board who do strand extensions and have given good tips on minimizing the stringiness.

Do you know what method you got last time?

Again, welcome! :)

To minimize the stringy look in strand extensions:

pack as much hair on the head as humanly possible!

No hair left out between strands. (of course you'll leave hair out around the perimeter of your hairline so you can pull the hair up and disguise the extensions)

My hair is super thin, but I managed to get about 6-7 ounces of strand hair on it. I do prefer the look of wefts because it is not stringy, and for that I wear 8 ounces of 22" inch hair.

yes as previously mentioned you want to add hair to as much of your head as possible, try to go up to an inch away from part areas, if they are visible up there, then have them keep moving them a half inch until they are not visible. Just be care not to add too much hair in the strands though, big strands on small amounts of your own hair will be too much weight on your own hair.
