QuoteReplyTopic: How long should you keep stuff? Posted: August 31 2004 at 4:32am
OK..I have a real problem with rotating my stock of clothing....I want to know. What is the longest one should keep a piece. I mean, even if it is your favorite black sweater, you can't keep it forever. So how often does everyone here "purge their closets" and what rationale do you use when deciding whether to trash or keep??

If I still like something, I'll keep it until it wears out :-P . I'm so like a man that way! I clean out closets when I have like no room left, and I keep or trash things based on whether I can see myself wearing it again or not.
More awesome than a manatee!

You can theoretically keep it for life. No one can tell you that you may or may not wear something just because of the current fashion being different. Wear whatever you like. I'd say in practice, you can keep any piece of clothing until it's worn out to the extent that you feel uncomfortable being seen in it. Even then, you can keep it and wear it around the house.

I have a top i got when i was like 10 or 11. I still wear it and there was this day i wore it and this guy was like...this top is beautiful and i was like....huh?? I dont gain any weight so it would be senseless to purge anything out of my closet...well the nice ones anyway
I don't think you need to get rid of anything that you like as long as it still fits and dosen't look like a rag. I have some shirts that I have had for a few years now and they still are pretty much in style and they still look new. But.... I usually throw something away if it dosen't fit or if I think it isn't fashionable anymore.

Carson Kressley my fashion idol says that if you haven't worn something
in over a year, throw it out. Other than that, it's fair game! (Don't worry
about holes... you can just say you're going for the "deconstructed look).
