QuoteReplyTopic: Katie Couric with extensions on "Today" Posted: February 21 2000 at 2:57pm
Just by luck this morning, I happened to flip over to "Today" while they were doing a segment on the latest hair accessories. For at least a minute, I couldn't identify the woman with the long bronze colored hair talking to the woman with the long blonde hair. Imagine my shock when I realized it was Katie Couric wearing fall that fell in big curls 6-8 inches below her shoulders. She was not only virtually unrecognizable, but looked several years younger. Needless to say it looked great, as the other woman repeatedly told her. Having only seen Katie with long hair in VERY old photos, I had no idea how it would look if she still had it today. If this was any indication (which it obviously should be), she'd wear it extremely well.
The segment ended with the woman telling Katie that she loved the long hair on her. Katie then asked if short hair was really out. The woman said, that based on what had appeared on the runways for the spring shows, that long hair was still very in (though, I personally have heard that the center-parted stick straight look was out on the runways and some semblence of an actual hairstyle was in). Katie then lamented that by the time she grew her short hair out it wouldn't be in style anymore. She also said that wearing the extension certainly made her feel different and with that, she tossed her long fake locks over her shoulder and threw it to commercial.
And, before you ask, NO, I don't have a picture, but I wish I did. =)

3 pm is simultaneously too late and too early to start anything.

I turned on the TV just a few minutes before the end of this morning's "Today" and was stunned to see Katie with the wig/fall/whatever. Stunned. She looked great.
Re: Katie's lament that "by the time she grew her short hair out it wouldn't be in style anymore" ... well, she's been wearing her hair short for many years, even when long hair has been "in." So if she wants it long, the only way she'll get it is to grow it when short hair is deemed to be "in."

I was just about ready to say that I never really thought short or long was ever really in or out, but I think there are "tendencies" towards one or the other.
During the 1920s, it was definitely short hair. In the 1960s, definitely long hair! Late 70s....hmmm...well "wings" were in style, but honestly it was just about as common to see long as short, so it's difficult to say. For men, I'd say 70s and 80s, defintely longer.
But today? Generally, I do think I see a lot more men with very short hair, and I suppose, as a whole, I see more short hair.
But I'm confused -- for those who are not in the limelight and probably won't wear extensions, how can long hair "make a comeback?" There simply has to be a transition period between short and long!

Yes. Let's say, for the sake of discussion that short hair is "in" now. And that a woman, let's say her name is "Katie," ;-) has short hair. Then, long hair becomes the "in" style, and remains "in" style for, oh, about two years. At the time long hair becomes the "in" style, Katie decides to begin growing her hair. Two years later, her hair is (at most, probably about) 12 inches longer than it was. But at this point, short hair becomes the "in" style. So, for much of the time that long hair was "in" style, Katie had short hair -- or at least, shorter hair than she wanted. And by the time long hair goes "out" of style, and short hair is the "in" style, Katie now has the long hair she wanted.
To summarize: if a woman has short hair when long hair becomes the "in" style, and begins growing her hair, chances are that by the time she grows her short hair long, that long hair will be "out" of style.
It seems that fashions change faster than is it is humanly possible to keep up with. If a woman wants long hair, she will, by necessity, be out of step (during some period of time) with the latest hair fashions.
I don't usually do this, but does anyone have a photo? (Can't believe I got to work on time and missed the Today show @#$%@!)
Katie has worn wigs/extensions before and I wasn't really impressed because it looked fake. This apparently didn't. The words "Katie" and "long hair" in the same sentence really send me...
I'll offer the thought that maybe Katie should go by the style that she thinks looks best on her and that she enjoys the most, and not the one that she thinks is going "in" or "out" of fashion. It seems that at any given moment these days, there are about equal numbers of celebs getting drastic short cuts, and growing out the drastic short cuts they got a few months ago. So why even bother trying to follow it? I've always preferred Katie with short, layered hair, but I've never see Flea rave about her like this either, so maybe longer locks are worth a shot. I like what it did for Ann Curry.
In a side note, I was really hoping that she might boost her style a bit this week when she hosted the Tonight Show. A high-profile gig, a different nighttime audience, seems like a perfect moment to jazz her hair up a bit (which to me would mean putting some waves and curls in it, but you can pick your own favorite change). I was disappointed that she went for the sexy dress, the makeup, but the hair stayed the same.... ah, well then.

That was three years ago, and still no-one has invented the miracle hair growth potion that will make it possible for us to wear a different length every day :( Come on scientists, enough with sending people to Mars and teleporting teapots, why don't you use your brains where they're needed and pull us kicking and screaming into the world of 21st Century hair technology???
