Self Cut Layers

just the other day my friend Kristy came in to school and had just gotted her very long hair layered and it looked so great. I told her I wanted to get mine done just like hers, except mine was only about 5 or 6 inches past my shoulders, shorter than hers. She told me that there was no need to go to a salon since i only wanted layers, but that if I tied my hair up real tight above my head and cut the top of the pony tail I would have instant layers. I should`ve asked her why if this worked so well why she went and payed to have it done. But i don`t have a job or a lot of money right now so I tried it. I cut a little much of the pony tail off but I figured I might as well get a trim in too and I was excited about being able to cut my own hair. Bad decision. The layers were terrible looking, and some were much shorter than I expected. It looked all chopped up all over and no matter how i tried to style it it looked bad. So i ended up having to go to a salon and pay 40$ to have it fixed. Now my hair is way above my shoulders at its longest poing, because the stylist I payed went nuts with her scissors and left with basically not much of the hair i had been growing out. And whats worse the short layers are almost short enough to just be called bangs. It doesn`t look horrible, but way too short and stupid on my part.

Mel....don`t be discouraged by your results. I know that this experience did not come out the way you wanted, but don`t give up on doing your hair. You had the right idea in mind, just the wrong approach. If I would have been you.....I would have started with light layers so that I got the hang of cutting layers. Remember cutting layers all depends on how much you elevate the hair from the scalp on out. Knowing how to do your hair trims...color...perms is a great thing especially if you have friend and you can do each others. I do my own and others all the time :) Mail me if you like.
